rat-stealing.jpgJessica Gould, a reporter with the Washington City Paper who gained infamy by stealing food from Whole Foods grocery store sample sections, has been let go from the publication, Big Head DC has learned. Several others were also let go in an effort to reduce costs. Ben Eason, the new president of the paper, talked to us in August about his vision for the paper. Editor Erik Wemple is said to be devastated by the forced cuts.

gay-cab.jpgJason Cherkis, a Washington City Paper writer, has become quite the expert at exploring the bathrooms of Union Station as he’s grown more bold in experimenting with the art of cruising for sex. Sadly, though, his newly found expertise may have cost him a ride during yesterday’s first DC snowfall of the season.

As Cherkis explains in a blog post, he was late to work yesterday and didn’t have enough cash to pay the full price of a cab fare to make a meeting on time. So, he hailed a cab and asked the driver whether the last five bucks he had on him would be enough for a ride (City Paper staffers, you see, are notorious for their lack of on-hand money).

But no, it wasn’t. The cab driver would not give him a ride. And speculation is running rampant as to why. Joe Warminsky, a commenter on Cherkis’ blog offers this interesting suggestion: “Maybe the cabbie thought you were offering $5 for a BJ.”

Cherkis hasn’t confirmed whether that theory could be correct, but thankfully he says he made it to his meeting on time by jogging every other block.

busted.jpgWow. Big Head DC has just received word that several City Paper staffers have been asked by the Whole Foods grocery store chain to stop taking free samples from market displays, if they do not intend on purchasing any merchandise!

The grocer’s dramatic step was taken in response to a blog post penned last week by City Paper staffer Jessica Gould, which explained to readers how to effectually steal food from various Whole Food chains.

“To sample successfully at the P Street Whole Foods, you go straight to the bakery section and work your way to the front,” Gould wrote in the controversial post. “The bakery’s good for some fresh bread and, if you’re lucky, a bit of Mo’s Dipping Sauce. Then you head to the olive section where, without risking disapproval, you can sample as many olives as you like. Sometimes you even find a quartered quesadilla atop the prepared foods counter.Gould went on to add that her favorite food to sample is free cheese.

In an almost taunting manager, she also said that she’s “always appreciated the store’s lax sample policies.”

Whole Food managers across the city, we’ve learned, have received complaints about Gould’s tactics from customers who actually do purchase after feasting on food samples. Read more…

pepe1.pngSo, apparently, sparrows are taking up residence in the salad bar sections of several local Whole Foods, and the stores’ managers don’t give a damn whether bird droppings, feathers or even Avian Flu get into our food.

“This is Pepe,” explains a local blogger regarding the above pic. “He lives in the salad bar at the Whole Foods in Tenleytown.

“No, I didn’t choose his name; you can thank the Whole Foods managers for that. When my friend complained about a bird in the pasta salad, the manager replied, ‘Oh, that’s just Pepe. We’ve been trying to catch him for weeks.’”

A commenter then added this delicious musing:

“There also is a bird living in the Old Town Alexandria Whole Foods but I don’t know if the staff named that one.”

Yum.

mommyissues1.gifEvery Thursday Metro Mama writes about issues facing parents in our crazy slice of heaven.

Organic: To be or not to be? One pressing issue on the minds of moms is whether or not to go organic. This is both for food choices and cleaning products, which can be better for our health and the environment, but not better for our wallet.

With our food choices, we mainly shop at Safeway, which is close and convenient to home, but sometimes do go to Whole Foods and Trader Joes. The product I insist on buying organic is milk, skim milk to be exact. I choose this due to the fact that in my mom’s group, another mother told the story that doctors are seeing more cases of girls developing breasts at an earlier age. She said it was due to all the hormones they give cows to produce milk. Since I have a daughter, this news scared me particularly, even if this bit of information is a rumor or an urban legend. I didn’t want to take any chances, so organic milk for us almost 100% of the time.

Another thing we buy organic is fruit, but only occasionally. Sometimes after eating some non-organic bananas that taste funny, I’ll switch back to organic for awhile. Now cleaning products on the other hand are a whole different story. I’m a clean freak, germ-a-phobic mom, and have at least three generations of other clean freaks in my family. We hate dirt, dust and grime and love the power of bleach.

Now I’ve read about how bad bleach is for the environment but nothing else has its ability to remove mold and mildew, and an assortment of other nasty things. I have tried a bottle or two of those organic cleaners with orange extract stuff in them, but I’d rather have that good ole’ bottle of Lysol killing all the germs around my house.

Don’t read Parents magazine, their reader stories will scare the beejesus out of you. One story included a tale about a toddler who washed her face with antibacterial soap, didn’t rinse it off all the way, and received some sort of chemical burn. Of course we don’t really need antibacterial soap, as it’s the friction of washing your hands that actually kills the germs, so regular soap will work fine. Other organic products I’ve tried include shampoos, conditioners and deodorant, but let me tell you, that organic deodorant does not work….I won’t describe further.

Then last week on the local news channel, what do I hear to my surprise? Young boys who are using products with lavender and tee tree oil are now developing breasts!

It seems like no matter what products we choose, we can’t win. I’ll just stick to what I know and hope we don’t get cancer or die of a nasty strain of bacteria.
