BHDC 'Valerie Plame' File:

And its reporting, we hear, will be just as solid as that of the Washington Times. We kid, of course, since the Washington Capital Sun is a completely imaginary paper dreamed up by the creators of a new movie based on the outing of Valerie Plame and the wacky world of former New York Times reporter Judith Miller. But that’s not the only trickery doing down! “[W]hile the real Judith Miller may be remembered as a stylish, slightly scary reporter of 59, headed off to jail in a quilted black jacket and tortoise-frame sunglasses, in the movie she is a sizzling Kate Beckinsale, 34, dressed in a, shall we say, form-fitting skirt,” reports WaPo. Miller has got to be flattered by that casting. Meanwhile, the editor of the Capital Sun is none other than Angela Bassett, most famous for her star turn as Tina Turner. Another bit of Hollywood magic, indeed, since diversity in real Washington newsrooms, especially at the top, is lean at best. As Anne Schroeder might say, “Not sayin’, just sayin’.”

Sure, Valerie Plame can afford to blog for free at Huffington Post, but is potential exposure enough of a reason for most people to contribute to the site without pay? Arianna Huffington, is, after all, rich, and it’s suspected that the site is putting plenty more dimes in her pockets. Not that we think Candy Spelling deserves any extra bucks, but still.

It was explained on Wikipedia, that’s how. TNR’s Douglas Wokl has the full spread:

valerie_plame.JPGGraceful writing takes a distant second place to neutrality. The language of the “Plame affair” article, like a lot of Wikipedia, is flatly declarative, not particularly quotable and occasionally afflicted with wobbly construction. (A typical sentence: “It is the only indictment brought by the grand jury, and Fitzgerald has stated that he does not expect to be indicting anyone else, citing repeatedly Libby’s obstruction of justice as a main impediment to finding out what happened in investigating the leak of Valerie Wilson’s classified, covert CIA identity.” ) And so the entry is an obstacle course of little infelicities and colorless clots of subclauses, from the first paragraph’s factual but pace-dragging citation of Joe Wilson’s memoir The Politics of Truth to the concluding section, headlined “Other perspectives on the CIA leak scandal,” which reads (following a link to “Alternate theories regarding the CIA leak scandal” ) in its entirety: “Since the CIA leak scandal became public knowledge, commentators began presenting multiple and often highly-contested perspectives on it in various media.” You don’t say.

So said Joe Wilson in an exclusive interview on Keith Olbermann tonight regarding the noon hour Scooter Libby verdict. He said that he was in a restaurant in DC today when his wife, former covert CIA agent Valerie Plame, called him to tell him the news.

He added that he hopes that President will keep his word to fire anyone in the White House who was involved in the leak. Dick Cheney and Karl Rove, as a result of testimony presented during the trial, are known to have been involved.

“I would have appreciated the President showing some sadness for [Valerie],” Wilson said, noting that President Bush expressed such sentiments for Libby today. “We’re hoping that Valerie will be able to get her book out…but we may have to litigate that. She has a right to tell her story.”

Olbermann will interview Plame in NYC on March 17.

There might even be a Scooter Libby verdict by the time this happens

Outed CIA operative Valerie Plame is coming in from the cold to speak with MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann on March 17, according to an announcement e-mailed to supporters of event sponsors People For the American Way. Plame, however, won’t be bumping Richard Lewis’s usual one-on-one shtick with Olbermann on Countdown, and she certainly isn’t filling Michael Musto’s regular slot. A select group of NPR tote baggers will get to see Olbermann and Plame face off live at Manhattan’s Tishman Auditorium.

We told you about their note from last night. Well, MSNBC reports that the judge in the case didn’t understand their scribbles, so he wrote them a note back. Then, they quickly sent another note back saying that they were able to resolve their problem themselves this morning. The original note should be released soon.

Ain’t this noteworthy?

Washington is abuzz about what was in a note passed from the Scooter Libby jury to the judge in the case late yesterday. The judge is expected to hold a hearing regarding that note later this hour.

The Reliable Source explains today just how dedicated Patrick Fitzgerald is to securing a Scooter Libby conviction:

With a massive snowstorm canceling Sunday flights out of Chicago, how did Very Special Prosecutor (and former People mag “Sexiest Man Alive” runner-up) Patrick Fitzgerald make it to the Scooter Libby trial at 9:30 yesterday morning? “Alternate means,” he told our colleague Carol Leonnig, meaning: He drove. All 15 hours or whatever! Whatta guy.

As Big Head DC reported Friday, WaPo’s ombudsman, Deborah Howell, was expected to publish a piece today regarding a recent controversial outlook article penned by partisan lawyer Victoria Toensing, which was published just before the Scooter Libby jurors went into deliberation.

And she did — but some people we’ve spoken to today are surprised that she didn’t come down harder on Post editors. Some liberal bloggers and columnists have said that the piece amounted to jury tampering, since it contained “parsed interpretations of the law” as related to the Libby case, but Howell argues that it was not. “This wasn’t tampering,” she wrote today. “The judge has instructed jurors to stay away from news reports.”

She does note one piece of the story that she feels should have been mentioned:

While Toensing is a partisan, she also filed a friend-of-the-court brief during the leak investigation with media lawyer Bruce W. Sanford on behalf of 36 news organizations, including The Post. She and Sanford, who also worked on the 1982 law, argued that journalists shouldn’t have to testify because no crime was committed if Plame wasn’t a covert operative. Editors should have mentioned the court filing in the Outlook piece.

While there’s no way to know yet whether the Toensing piece influenced jurors, one thing’s for sure (at least from the e-mails we’ve received today): Many are questioning Howell’s ability to fairly evaluate WaPo journalism.

She usually plays it pretty safe, but we’ve heard that WaPo’s ombudsman has a special critique prepared for Sunday regarding a recent outlook piece by lawyer Victoria Toensing, which was published just before the Scooter Libby jurors went into deliberation.

The Post has received many complaints that Toensing, an assistant deputy attorney general in the Reagan administration, used the paper to do her bidding on behalf of Libby. Her editors failed to note that she was seated at the defense lawyers’ table during sessions of the trial. She’s also friends with Barbara Comstock, who has played a role in Libby’s defense fund and has managed P.R. on his behalf. They’ve even done a book tour together.

Deborah Howell is apparently aching to shed some light on the missing aspects of the story.
