“Powerful plaintiffs attorney Richard “Dickie” Scruggs and a co-defendant pleaded guilty Friday to conspiring to bribe a judge,” according to press reports. “The surprise plea came Friday during a hearing in Oxford, Miss. on pretrial matters, court officials said.”

Scruggs is the brother-in-law of Sen. Trent Lott, who abruptly announced his resignation from Congress in November.

Filed under: Chris Matthews, Hillary Clinton, Trent Lott

matthews.jpgThat’s a direct quote from MSNBC anchor Chris Matthews from tonight’s 5 p.m. Hardball program in regards to the National Organization for Women. In this case he was labeling women as “these people.” It was a surprising statement for Matthews to make, considering that he was forced to apologize on-air just days ago for admittedly sexist comments he’s made about Sen. Hillary Clinton throughout her campaign for president. Even more interestingly, Matthews made the comment to his guest, recently retired Sen. Trent Lott, who, himself, has had a habit of knocking political minorities.

Filed under: Lobbyists, Trent Lott, John Breaux, Chet Lott, John Breaux Jr., Bret Boyles

breaux-lott.jpgJust three weeks after unexpectedly leaving the Congress, former Sen. Trent Lott has gone into business as a lobbyist with former Sen. John Breaux (D-LA).

“The Senate duo will set up their new lobbying and strategic planning shop at 607 14th St. NW, where they will be joined by their two sons, Chet Lott and John Breaux Jr., and former Lott chief of staff Bret Boyles,” Roll Call reports. “Boyles served as Lott’s top aide up until two weeks ago when Lott resigned his Senate seat just a year into his fourth six-year term”

Until recently, Chet Lott was best known for trying to be a musician. It’s unknown how his musical roots make him personally qualified to be a lobbyist. He didn’t respond to our requests for comment.

It is known that Sen. Lott’s move allows him to dodge new ethics laws. A new ethics bill passed by the Democratic Congress in 2007 would have forced him to wait two years before becoming a lobbyist had he served out his full term.

dan-savage.jpgPerhaps you don’t want to believe the Benjamin Nicholas / Trent Lott story because you played a role in once hiring Nicholas, an alleged plagiarist, to write a few articles for your newspaper, The Stranger? Have you had communications with Nicholas since this story broke? If so, what has he told you? Have you not been honest in explaining your relationship with him? Most importantly, why did he risk his negatively affecting escort business by not flat-out denying a Lott relationship in his original e-mails?
