“I had arrived in Washington not knowing anyone,” writes Ruben Castaneda, a Washington Post metro beat reporter, in one of those obligatory year-end reporter-shares-his-heartfelt-yet-unrelatable feelings articles. ”Working the night shift was socially isolating, and the alcohol and crack only exacerbated my sense of loneliness. I knew that if I got busted holding or buying drugs, it would make news, and my life would be vaporized. Besides the work hours, my sense of shame and fear caused me to turn inward. It’s easier to harbor a terrible secret if no one knows you very well.”
You’re right, we never knew you, Ruben, but suddenly you became a lot more interesting. We’ll be watching.
