pants.jpgRoy Pearson, the administrative law judge who lost a $54 million lawsuit against a D.C. dry cleaner for losing his pants, is about to lose his job, the Washington Post reports. And - surprise! - his temperament just might have something to do with it.

The Institute for Legal Reform told Big Head DC last month that family he sued was forced to close another one of their dry cleaning businesses as a result of the cost of the lawsuit.

The Institute for Legal Reform tells Big Head DC that the Chung family has been forced to close another one of their drycleaning businesses as a result of the infamous $54 million dollar lawsuit filed against them by Judge Roy Pearson, who said they lost a pair of his pants. He lost his original case, but is appealing.

“The Chung family’s action today to close their Custom Cleaners store due to a nearly three-year battle against Judge Pearson’s abusive lawsuit is a sad reality and another reminder of the real effect that frivolous lawsuits have on businesses across the nation,” says Lisa A. Rickard, president of the organization. “The Chungs have now shuttered two of their three stores due to this lawsuit.”

“What is worse is that Washington DC’s Consumer Protection Act, the law that Judge Pearson is using as a weapon against the Chungs, is still in effect,” she adds. “This law was designed to protect the citizens of the District of Columbia, but instead is being used as a weapon against them.”

The organization now calls on Mayor Adrian Fenty and the Washington, D.C. City Council “to quickly amend this law to bring common sense back to the consumer protection laws.”

Roy Pearson, the DC judge who sued his dry cleaners for $54 million after they lost his pants, might want to call a tailor — a resume tailor, that is. Pearson has been informed by the city commission that his reappointment is in jeopardy, and he could lose his job. The disgruntled judge has 15 days to file a rebuttal.

It’s not every e-mail we receive that starts out like this: “You are undoubtedly aware of the $54 million pants lawsuit.”

Why, yes, we are. And we know that the legal system has found resoundingly in favor of the laundry mat owners, Jin and Soo Chung, who were sued by Judge Roy Pearson because he said they lost his pants.

However, their ordeal is not yet over; they have drained their saving accounts in contesting the lawsuit, racking up over $100,000 in legal expenses. The judge in the case recently denied request for immediate reconsideration, but Pearson is widely anticipated to file a formal appeal.

In an effort to defray their bills, the Institute for Legal Reform and the American Tort Reform Association are co-hosting a fundraiser on Tuesday, July 24 for the Chungs. Full details here.

lostpants.PNGIn a show of true journalistic commitment, the Washington Post, home of Woodward and Berstein, sent OFF/Beat blogger Emil Steiner on assignment today to cover day one of the civil trial of D.C. administrative law judge Roy L. Pearson who is suing local dry cleaning business Custom Cleaners for $54 million. Why is he doing such a thing? Because they lost his pants.

Highlights from the trial:

“Pearson showed up at 9:15 wearing a well-pressed blue pinstripe suit and purple tie.” With matching pants, mind you.

“Although the defense, the judge and even Pearson seem to agree that this claim is not about the pants but about a misleading sign, Pearson still wants to present evidence about the pants.”

“Throughout the opening statements, the judge had a subtle smile.” Our smile would not have been so subtle.

“Pearson’s fourth witness, Grace Hewell, was the most entertaining thus far. The 89-year-old wheelchair-bound veteran of WWII entered amid concerns that the room was not wheelchair-accessible. Instead of the witness chair, she was placed next to Pearson. When asked if she would tell the truth during her oath, she asked the court officer to please speak up, explaining she doesn’t hear well in her left ear. She then briefly recounted how and when she lost her hearing.” Maybe she has some pants lint in her ears?

“For his sixth witness, Pearson called his son, a caterer. He testified that when he first started in the food-service industry, he didn’t have enough money to buy a suit, so he often “shopped” in his father’s closet, borrowing suits as necessary.” And there were always matching pants!

“[J]ust before 3:30, Roy L. Pearson broke down, appeared to almost cry, and quickly requested a break. Would it be heartless to ask whether he had been bored to tears?” We know just how he feels. We once woke up without our pants!

“Pulling himself together, Pearson continued with his exhaustive description of how he - or, in his telling, Custom Cleaners - lost his pants.”

Final arguments have yet to be heard, but we’re guessing Pearson wins in a landslide.
