David Kuo, a former Bush Administration official who cares deeply about faith-based initiatives, became instantly famous after a report on 60 Minutes aired Sunday regarding his misgivings on what he views as the politicization of religion in the conservative White House.
Kuo told the mop-headed Lesley Stahl in an interview that people in the administration’s political affairs office called Pat Robertson “insane,” labeled Jerry Falwell “ridiculous,” and said that James Dobson “had to be controlled.” He also says in his new book, “Tempting Faith: An Inside Story of Political Seduction,” that President Bush often spoke about his “compassionate” agenda, but never really advanced it.
Amy Argetsinger and Roxanne Roberts, our faithful Reliable Sources, soon caught up with Kuo, grilling him with questions from conservatives who also quickly came out of the woodwork to cast stones at Mr. Faith.
“So, the smears are beginning,” Kuo wrote on his blog this week. “A call this afternoon from a DC gossip columnist who was called by a Republican finance person alleging I had done something wrong to him five years ago.
“All I wanted to do was fight back — to defend myself and preserve my ‘reputation.’ But then I made a quick decision: I called the columnist and said that I apologized and I was wrong.
“Do I remember the situation? Nope. Does that matter? Probably not. I am called to be reconciled to my brother and that person, whoever he is, is my brother. And so I am sorry. It felt amazingly freeing actually.”
Kuo concluded his blog entry saying that he was “reminded that Jesus really did know what he was talking about.”
Who knew that our very own Rox and Amy could bring out such good and light in people?
