Pat Buchanan got so riled up during a discussion last night about Geraldine Ferraro’s controversial comments that he yelled out “shut up” at pundit Keli Goff during an on-air debate. Liberal talker Rachel Maddow ended up scolding him for the outburst, and MSNBC host Dan Abrams was noticeably shaken:

What did you think of Buchanan’s style?

katrina_vanden_heuvel_140x140.jpgKatrina vanden Heuvel, the editor of The Nation magazine, told Chris Matthews today on Hardball that Sen. Barack Obama’s plagiarism scandal should not have been covered on the program because, she feels, it doesn’t matter to the common person. An incredulous Matthews responded that she should ask Sen. Joe Biden whether these kind of issues matter — a reference to Biden being forced to quit his bid for the presidency in 1987 after he plagiarised a speech. Pat Buchanan, a guest on the show, said that he felt this was a “bad day” for Obama, and that his character will likely be called into question more often now in the campaign.

Lawrence O’Donnell, a liberal commentator, says Mormonism is “demented, Scientology-like” and is rooted in racism. Pat Buchanan defends Mormonism by noting that his Christian great grandfather “had slaves.”

russert1.PNGWith Washington-based MSNBCers being forced to abandon their old 400 N. Capitol building in favor of Tim Russert’s Meet the Press studios on Nebraska Ave., it’s no secret that some staffers are grumbling.

Logistically, the new studio is farther away from the Capitol, making it more difficult to lure lawmakers in for quickie interviews. Plus, Hardball’s Chris Matthews was not happy to have to give up his autonomy and bow to Russert’s control. He even made futile complaints to MSNBC honchos.

And now some physical limitations of the new space are becoming clear. Thus, you’ve got news reporter David Shuster sharing office space with a political pundit Pat Buchanan. These types of news/opinion syntheses had always tried to be avoided in the past. However, the new space, we hear, just can’t allow for that traditional boundary to remain.

Filed under: MSNBC, Pat Buchanan, Gay, Dan Abrams

On Dan Abrams’ MSNBC program tonight Pat Buchanan, looking old and confused, really stuck his foot in it when he intimated that being gay is a disease. Salon’s liberal editor Joan Walsh yelled at him during the segment, saying she strongly disagrees. And the show’s host, who tends not to show much bias when doing political reporting, even called Buchanan on the argument.
