Editor’s Note: A few of you have asked why I do these daily summaries of the latest political news instead of just parodying local bloggers all day. Well, as fun as that would be, I like to read the real news, too, so really, this exercise is more for me than for you anyhow. If you happen to get something out of it, then that’s just an accidental side effect.

That strong-talking, deep-voiced Maya Angelou was so inspired by the death of her lover gal pal Molly Ivins that she wrote a special, heartfelt poem for her in today’s Post:

Up to the walls of Jericho

She marched with a spear in her hand

Go blow them ram horns she cried

For the battle is in my hand

The walls have not come down, but they have been given a serious shaking.

That Jericho voice is stilled now.

Molly Ivins has been quieted.

I was so bowled over by Maya’s tribute that I decided to write the husky poet a nuanced poem celebrating her glorious words and spirit:

Up to the walls of Oprah’s mansion

She plods to see her female lovers

Go blow them lovers she always does

Because their “battle” is in her hand 

The walls, she is happy, Oprah has had reinforced with concrete.

She can make the ladies scream and writhe.

Maya Angelou is a loud, proud lover.

I know, I know. Tears. I’m just that good.
