An insider much too close to the situation to be talking tells Big Head DC that Sen. Larry Craig’s staffers have practically begged him to resign now that a Minnesota judge has decided NOT to overturn his guilty bathroom sex plea. Most who have not abandoned him yet to work for fellow Republican Idaho Sen. Mike Crapo desperately want to work for another Congress member — at this point, even a Democratic Congress member would do. The sentiment we’re hearing: “Put us out of our misery, so at least we can salvage our resumes.”

“Because the defendant’s plea was accurate, voluntary and intelligent, and because the conviction is supported by the evidence … the Defendant’s motion to withdraw his guilty plea is denied,” Hennepin County Judge Charles Porter wrote in denying Craig’s plea earlier today.

In a conversation early this morning with Big Head DC, a current staffer in Sen. Larry Craig’s Idaho office said she and others on his team believe he will retire and not seek re-election next year.

“I am not alone in thinking that he has been ready to retire for a couple years,” she stated. She added that she “and several of his staffers” are almost positive he won’t run again. She would not say whether Craig had confirmed the notion after yesterday’s shocking revelations.

The staffer said she has resigned from her role in the Senator’s office and has made plans to begin working for Sen. Mike Crapo.
