A relationship between former U.S. Senator David Boren and current NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg is growing ever more close, and the duo are ramping up private meetings since they first rendezvoused this summer, Big Head DC has learned.
According to sources in Oklahoma, where Boren now serves as the president of the University of Oklahoma, Boren has been pushing Bloomberg “hard not to rule out the possibility” of an independent run for president. Insiders are telling us that Boren may even want to run alongside Bloomberg as a vice presidential candidate.
Bloomberg met on Monday with Boren and had dinner with over the weekend to discuss promoting bipartisanship among candidates running for president.
“It is is a message to the two parties: Please rise to the occasion,” Boren is quoted by the AP as saying about the meetings. “If you don’t, there is always a possibility out there of an independent.”
There has long been speculation that Boren yearns to get back into the political game himself, as he abruptly left his position in the U.S. Senate in 1994. He was also well-known during his fifteen years in the Senate for wanting to perhaps one day run for president himself.
But whatever prompted Boren to resign in 1994 may prevent his current Bloomberg-centric ambitions from coming to fruition. Michael Petrelis, as well as other well-known gay activists, have accused the married Boren of sexually harassing some of his male Congressional staff members and of being a closeted homosexual. Some prominent gay Washingtonians have speculated that Boren’s surprise resignation from the Senate was prompted by this revelation, which Boren is said to have denied.
Whether Bloomberg is aware of the controversies surrounding Boren’s sexuality is unknown at this point. Requests for comment from both gentlemen have gone unreturned to date.
During his hosting duties at last night’s Dick Clark’s Rockin’ New Year’s Eve, American Idol host Ryan Seacrest had the opportunity to interview NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
“The Mike Bloomberg ‘He Isn’t Running’ presidential campaign continues to ‘not; move forward: The New York Post reports that Bloomberg aides are contacting political consultants to gauge their availability for a 2008 run, and that a former member of Bloomberg’s political team was told not to join the Hillary Clinton campaign just yet,”
