Excellent analysis of the Mediabistro ethos from Jossip’s Debbie Newman re: Howie Kurtz’s coverage of the company’s blog offerings:

So what’s Kurtz’s underlying point? Is he suggesting that Touby has lost her focus, that the journalistic utopia she once envisioned has instead yielded a celebrity media circus? That her ideal of an all-inclusive community (built on “warmth and camaraderie”) has become as cliquish and cutthroat as any other? If so, then I’d be the first to agree. Although I’d also be hard-pressed to hold just one person responsible, whether it’s the founder of Mediabistro or the founding editor of Gawker.

“Our tone is one of warmth and camaraderie and not nasty backbiting,” Mediabistro founder Laurel Touby (and boss of FishbowlDC’s Patrick Gavin) tells Howie Kurtz. “We can be arch, but we’re not making fun of people.”

brokentv.gifNot that we don’t watch CNN, but, as Inside Cable News has noted, something seems fishy with TVNewser’s latest coverage of CNN’s ratings. The Mediabistro blog site curiously highlighted CNN’s “cume” numbers from one of the network’s recent ratings press releases — an interesting move since cumes hold no significance whatsoever.

Talking cumes has been CNN’s talking point for years now. However, the data holds absolutely no meaning; in fact, network insiders should be embarrassed to tout that point because all it really means is that they’ve truly become the dinosaur in cable news. That is, people have been conditioned to tune into them, but then they immediately tune out because it doesn’t interest them. They tune out so fast that Nielsen doesn’t even calculate it. The data, as many researchers have noted, holds little relevancy or meaning.

Meanwhile, TVNewser is supposed to be the must-read on cable news and doesn’t even point that fact out, but instead highlights it as a triumph for CNN? Stop the presses!

cnbc_925.jpgBrian Steel, a lawyer, has been appointed new Vice President of Public Relations at CNBC. You’ll recall that Big Head DC first told you last month that CNBC was considering replacing Kevin Goldman, who had performed PR for the net to this point. Insiders said at the time that NBC honchos didn’t think Goldman was up to the task of taking on the upcoming FOX Business Channel. Goldman will now be forced to report to Steel.

Good luck, Mr. Steel — and watch out for knives that may one day fly toward your back….

And thanks to TVNewser’s Chris Ariens for noting our scoop. So much classier than Patrick Gavin!

Patrick Gavin is missing a helping verb in the second sentence below:

So a few were surprised when Mr. Archibald himself stopped by the Times today. He was there with Natasha (described by one as “his lady friend” ), but they rebuffed by security.

WERE is the word he’s looking for, wethinks. As in FishbowlDC and its owner Mediabistro WERE much more scrupulous before Patrick Gavin was hired.

pat-and-anne.pngMore Mediabistro blog-related corruption stories are flowing in to the Big Head DC headquarters, since we noted today that FishbowlDC stole our scoop regarding Tony Blankley’s departure from the Washington Times.

“I hyped the hell out of CableNewser, later TVNewser, when Brian Stelter launched it in early 2004,” Dave Hughes, the editor of DCRTV news blog, tells Big Head DC. “Then when Mediabistro took over, they immediately dropped the DCRTV link on their front page.”

Stelter has gone on to earn a high figure salary as a TV and news writer for The New York Times.

Hughes has since stopped linking altogether to what he calls “FishbowelDC” since they “bitched about giving me credit on the WaPo Radio demise scoop.” You’ll recall that FishbowlDC editor Patrick Gavin falsely claimed in late-August that his blog had that scoop first, when, in fact, DCRTV had beaten Gavin to the punch by almost two weeks. First FishbowlDC outright stole our scoop on Tony Blankley’s departure from the Washington Times last night, saying that the story was posted on their site first when, in fact, we beat them by 6 minutes. And, today, editor Patrick Gavin picks on The Hill newspaper for an ad typo, but then Gavin himself makes a title-sized typo just a few minutes later (which we’ve circled in red): Read more…
