BHDC 'Matt Cooper' File:

Now, when I broke the story on teens’ tanning habits, I didn’t go all over telling everyone, “Hey, I broke the story on teens’ tanning habits.”

However, since Lawrence O’Donnell — MSNBC’s senior political analyst — broke the story about Karl Rove being the source that Matt Cooper has been protecting for two years, he’s definitely had no shame about tooting his own horn.

In his July 2 Huffington Post blog, he trumpeted:

I revealed in yesterday’s taping of the McLaughlin Group that Time magazine’s emails will reveal that Karl Rove was Matt Cooper’s source. I have known this for months but didn’t want to say it at a time that would risk me getting dragged into the grand jury… Since I revealed the big scoop, I have had it reconfirmed by yet another highly authoritative source. Too many people know this. It should break wide open this week. I know Newsweek is working on an ‘It’s Rove!’ story and will probably break it tomorrow.

On July 3, he blogged:

On Friday, I broke the story that the e-mails that Time turned over to the prosecutor that day reveal that Karl Rove is the source Matt Cooper is protecting.

Yesterday, he came up with this angle:

Karl Rove’s lawyer, Robert Luskin, had his holiday weekend ruined on Friday when I broke the story that the e-mails that Time delivered to the special prosecutor that afternoon reveal that Karl Rove is the source Matt Cooper has been protecting for two years.

Now, that’s a man who’s willing to take credit for his work.

With Time Magazine reporter Matt Cooper and New York Times reporter Judith Miller all over the news, I find myself thinking a lot about silly little things like freedom of the press. Today, for instance, I’m fondly remembering “Subpoena Envy” — episode #37 of Murphy Brown –where Murphy is subpoenaed to appear before a grand jury, but instead of giving up her source, she goes to jail. She expects that her slammer time will be hard and she doesn’t want FYI News to help bail her out too quickly because she wants to be a poster woman for the cause. Instead, she serves at a sweeter version of Martha Stewart’s Camp Cupcake, and FYI doesn’t bail her out for several days due to some technicality that I can’t remember. Murphy ends up knitting. Miles enjoys her agony. Laughter ensues.

Weren’t freedom of the press issues so much funnier when portrayed on Murphy Brown than on the real-life news?
