BHDC 'Lou Dobbs' File:

Lou Dobbs, of all people, is making the most sense to us right now:

At this point, all of the geniuses in the mainstream media, mainly in television news, need to summon the courage to tell their audiences that there are a few important issues to be discussed and a few important facts to be collected before permitting a public coronation of any candidate based on dynasty, momentum, charisma or, God save us all, likeability.

Obama may be a candidate for change, but he wasn’t spending change in Iowa. Obama spent more than $600,000 for each of the 16 delegates he won during the caucus, which still left him more than 2,000 delegates short of winning the nomination.

lou-dobbs.jpgMr. Dobbs himself once told me that ‘Q’ ratings that measure the popularity of media personalities found that no other media figure was more respected across the board by Democrats, Republicans and Independents,” writes WSJ’s John Fund. “He claimed he was striking a chord with the broad middle class that transcended ideology.”

And now, based in part on those alleged Q ratings, CNN’s Dobbs is floating rumors that he may run for president, thinking he’d have a real shot a populist candidate. Just don’t tell the immigrants. (He hates them, and they tend to feel the same way.)

talkinghead.jpgIt looks like long-time TV critic Roger Ebert deserves two thumbs up for garnering the top punditry prize in the nation from Forbes magazine. What exactly does that mean? Well! It means that out of all the talking heads you see and read each day, he’s the best of the best. Apparently.

Ebert beat out some really loud people you might have thought to be shoe-ins in such a battle of brawn. Bill Maher was ranked second, followed by FOX News’ king Bill O’Reilly; Senate candidate Al Franken; TV “journalist” Geraldo RiveraRosie O’Donnell; film critic Leonard Maltin; legal commentator Greta Van Susteren; CNN news commentator Lou Dobbs; and basketball analyst Bill Walton.

Jesse Jackson, Sean Hannity and Keith Olbermann were among near misses for the top ten.

Interestingly, liberal Web pundits like Markos Moulitsas of Daily Kos and Josh Marshall of Talking Points Memo scored high “likability ratings” with certain population segments, but their awareness numbers, which are more important than appeal, according to the Forbes polling team, were “barely on the radar screen.”

The same is largely true of elite, but popular, newspaper columnists like Thomas Friedman, Maureen Dowd, and Robert Novak.

So! What to take away from all this? Grab some popcorn, stow your politics and start watchin’ some movies.

tucker_carlson.jpgBig Head DC can exclusively confirm that MSNBC honchos have decided definitively to cancel the 4 p.m. live airing of “Tucker,” the political program hosted by conservative talker Tucker Carlson, which normally re-airs at 6 p.m. Bosses decided that focusing exclusively on creating a single live show at 6 p.m. will be best for the show, reliable insiders have told us.

Some MSNBC top brass are convinced that the 4 p.m. show hurt ratings for the 6 p.m. hour and would rather air more breaking news segments in the afternoon. Six o’clock, too, is far more important to advertisers.

There are also rumors from CNN that Lou Dobbs’ program will move from its current spot at 6 p.m. to fill departing anchor Paula Zahn’s current 8 p.m. slot. This move, MSNBCers believe, will ultimately give “Tucker” a great shot at winning the lucrative cable news 6 p.m. crown.

The realigned Carlson TV plans will likely go into effect on July 9.

We guess Lou Dobbs isn’t going on vacay this summer, because he’s complaining about the Congressional summer recess — five-weeks off for what he calls a “do nothing Congress” — but a few Congressional members do have some plans for fall. Congressional wish lists are slowly trickling in on The Hill’s Congress Blog:

Georgia GOP Rep. Lynn Westmoreland:
“I hope we can get our budget stuff done. I’d like to see us look at tax reform. I’d like to see some stuff on the Fair Tax, or at least some hearings on it.”

Texas Dem. Rep. Charles Gonzalez:
“When we come back I hope that we slow down and reduce the political factoring that goes into everything that’s done. That’s my post-recess wish.”

Michigan Dem. Rep. Bart Stupak:
“I hope that they do nothing further because I don’t want them to do any more harm to the American people.”

You can bet that Santa’s gonna have to check these lists twice and thrice.

P.S. Hill blogger person at the controls, could you please ask these glossy Congressional members to have a little sass? It’s summer, for Pete’s sake. Let’s feel some heat.
