Excellent analysis of the Mediabistro ethos from Jossip’s Debbie Newman re: Howie Kurtz’s coverage of the company’s blog offerings:

So what’s Kurtz’s underlying point? Is he suggesting that Touby has lost her focus, that the journalistic utopia she once envisioned has instead yielded a celebrity media circus? That her ideal of an all-inclusive community (built on “warmth and camaraderie”) has become as cliquish and cutthroat as any other? If so, then I’d be the first to agree. Although I’d also be hard-pressed to hold just one person responsible, whether it’s the founder of Mediabistro or the founding editor of Gawker.

Big Head DC has learned that DCRTV is starting a campaign against the Mediabistro FishbowlDC blog, and will henceforth refer to it as FishBowelDC.

Dave Hughes, the longtime writer of DCRTV, is steaming like a broken printing press at FishbowlDC’s wet-behind-the-ears media gossip Patrick Gavin, who falsely claimed earlier this week that FishbowlDC had the scoop on the shuttering of Washington Post Radio.

“I loved reading FishbowlDC and how they bragged about being the first to link to Paul Farhi’s article at about 11 PM yesterday,” Hughes wrote yesterday. “But no mention of how DCRTV broke the story 10 days ago…..”

Is it high time for Mediabistro boss Laurel Touby to clean out her fishbowl? Only time will tell. But it is getting pretty murky in there.

Somebody’s been sending out e-mails using the name of Mediabistro founder Laurel Touby, and she appears none-too-happy about that, having accused Big Head DC this morning of doing the deed. Sorry, Laurel, the only thing we’d ever want to steal from you is your lucky 23 million dollar boa. But, if we did steal your name, our first mission would definitely be to e-mail Patrick Gavin and tell him to dig up some better media gossip, or else he’s replaced. And then we’d fire him anyway.
