Excellent analysis of the Mediabistro ethos from Jossip’s Debbie Newman re: Howie Kurtz’s coverage of the company’s blog offerings:

So what’s Kurtz’s underlying point? Is he suggesting that Touby has lost her focus, that the journalistic utopia she once envisioned has instead yielded a celebrity media circus? That her ideal of an all-inclusive community (built on “warmth and camaraderie”) has become as cliquish and cutthroat as any other? If so, then I’d be the first to agree. Although I’d also be hard-pressed to hold just one person responsible, whether it’s the founder of Mediabistro or the founding editor of Gawker.

Big Head DC has learned that DCRTV is starting a campaign against the Mediabistro FishbowlDC blog, and will henceforth refer to it as FishBowelDC.

Dave Hughes, the longtime writer of DCRTV, is steaming like a broken printing press at FishbowlDC’s wet-behind-the-ears media gossip Patrick Gavin, who falsely claimed earlier this week that FishbowlDC had the scoop on the shuttering of Washington Post Radio.

“I loved reading FishbowlDC and how they bragged about being the first to link to Paul Farhi’s article at about 11 PM yesterday,” Hughes wrote yesterday. “But no mention of how DCRTV broke the story 10 days ago…..”

Is it high time for Mediabistro boss Laurel Touby to clean out her fishbowl? Only time will tell. But it is getting pretty murky in there.

Somebody’s been sending out e-mails using the name of Mediabistro founder Laurel Touby, and she appears none-too-happy about that, having accused Big Head DC this morning of doing the deed. Sorry, Laurel, the only thing we’d ever want to steal from you is your lucky 23 million dollar boa. But, if we did steal your name, our first mission would definitely be to e-mail Patrick Gavin and tell him to dig up some better media gossip, or else he’s replaced. And then we’d fire him anyway.

According to Jossip, we’ll have to wait until a Wednesday night cocktail party to see Mediabistro’s (or should we say Jupitermedia’s?) Laurel Touby formally constrict her boa around the new TVNewser blogger, Chris Ariens, a 37-year-old former MSNBC producer who currently lives in Hoboken with his dog Nibbles. Ariens is a much older and much more single replacement for Brian Stetler, local Towson U. wunderkind who’s always liked too many donuts, but no one would say it out loud. As Stetler begins work at the NY Times today, we’ve already noticed that  Ariens has devoted 8 of his last 13 posts to covering NBC Universal companies. So watch out, Chris Matthews, he’s coming for you.

As Big Head DC reported a long time ago, Laurel Touby has been shopping her Mediabistro empire around to the highest bidder. And, today, she’s found the proper suitor — to the tune of $23 million smackers! It’s a price much higher than most media insiders we’ve spoken to ever thought Touby could broker.

What this will mean for the operations of FishbowlDC, we don’t know yet. We do know that FishbowlDC’s editor Patrick Gavin has long been looking to leave his position to focus on a book about 9/11.

It’s not very often that we see any scoops coming out of the Mediabistro FishbowlDC empire, so when editor Patrick Gavin proclaimed this morning a “First on FishbowlDC” exclusive centered on the Los Angeles Times, of all places, we kinda had to pay attention. “FishbowlDC has learned from a reliable source that the new managing editor for the Los Angeles Times will be current assistant managing editor John M. Arthur,” he breathlessly reported.

But, then we immediately got to thinking: Why would Gavin’s sources be better than those of FishbowlLA — you know, the Mediabistro blog that covers the L.A press?

So we made a few inquiries.

Turns out Gavin has no idea whether whether this scoop is real. In fact, the Times is now saying that “there’s been no such appointment,” and he’s had to totally backtrack: “Our source - whom we had no reason to doubt - called it ‘100%,’ but perhaps it’s more like ‘100% that the conventional wisdom within the newsroom has him getting the gig.’”

Oh, another week, another Gavin goof. Why doesn’t he just stick to schmoozing at charity events?

Laurel Touby roolz. I personally think she shouldn’t have even been looking for an assistant when she’s got a talent like Inky fully capable of fetching her coffee. No, I’m not talking about BHDC’s Inky — he or she is way overqualified. I’m talking about FishbowlDC’s Inky, that anonymous wunderkind who’s so wondrous that he or she rarely contributes ((love his or her bio, btw: “Inky is an anonymous contributor who does not work in journalism.” Yeah, that makes sense). But, still, good luck, Laurel.

Someone sent him an altered e-mail from inside the Roll Call camp, apparently dissing the Politico, but it was fake.

Boy, he’s got egg on his face now that he’s had to issue this retraction. Laurel Touby are you watching? His reportage skillz are simply amazing.
