It’s not working:

Maybe they need to ask Jon Stewart to come host a YouTube episode from the street.

jon.jpg“If the writers’ strike fails, it won’t be on account of Jon Stewart,” reports Portfolio. “In a show of solidarity with his fellow scribes, the Daily Show host has told his writing staff that he will cover all their salaries for the next two weeks, according to a well-placed source. He has also vowed to do the same for writers on The Colbert Report.

chris-drinking.JPGAfter a ho-hum interview by his wife Kathleen Matthews on Thursday night’s show, some D.C. media insiders were wondering privately if the Chris Matthews 10th anniversary Hardball bash would live up to all the hype (Patrick Gavin, after all, has been peeing his pants over this one).

Well, we were there, and can answer definitively: yes AND no. Some big politico “names” did not show, which was disappointing for Chris, but lots of people, including Sen. Ted Kennedy, told him they simply adore his new book Life’s a Campaign, copies of which were readily available for purchase at the decked-out Decatur House (which was kinda crass, if you ask us). Several TV types also told Chris that they thought Jon Stewart was much too hard on him during his recent Daily Show debacle, but just as many were whispering that the clobbering was just what the doctor ordered to tame his ever-growing ego.

The biggest question of the evening was what exactly the somewhat grumpy Chris was drinking. Read more…

Remember when Jon Stewart took Tucker Carlson down a notch a couple of years ago on CNN’s Crossfire? Well, he did it again last night, this time to a very grumpy Hardball host Chris Matthews, calling his new tome a “self-hurt book.” When Matthews tried to defend his writings, Stewart brilliantly shot him down.

“This is the worst interview I’ve ever had in my life!” Matthews ended up shouting; still, he later asked the Daily Show host to appear on his MSNBC program.

“I don’t troll,” Stewart responded with a smirk.

“Pardon me for being so wonky,” Education Secretary Margaret Spellings told Jon Stewart on tonight’s program after explaining loan programs, federal education law and dumb kids. She is one of the few, if not the only, Bush administration appointee who has faced the wrath of Jon to date.

Karen Feld recently caught up with Terry McAuliffe in DC as he continues on his non-stop quest to make his new book, “What A Party! My Life Among Democrats: Presidents, Candidates, Donors, Activists, Alligators, and Other Wild Animals,” number one of the New York Times bestseller list. (It’s currently tied at five.)

The former DNC chairman appeared confident that Hillary Clinton will be the next Prez, and he expects his buddy Bill to take on a unique role after the ‘08 election.

“If Hillary wins, it will only enhance Bill’s eight years,” McAuliffe told Feld. “His role as ‘First Gentleman’ will be that of ambassador-at-large.”

He also seems to have grown tired of appearing on traditional news news programs, like Meet the Press, and said The Daily Show is now tops on his list to get political messages out.

Only on the boob tube. Rush Limbaugh has already taped an appearance on FOX News’ soon-to-debut “Half-Hour News Hour,” playing the POTUS, with Ann Coulter as his VP.

But the program, which producers have said is inspired by The Daily Show, isn’t necessarily ready to play in Jon Stewart’s league right out of the gate.

“It was hit and miss—some stuff was inspired, and some was droppable, to say the least,” a source who attended a recent taping has told Radar Online.

Comedians Kurt Long and Susan Yeagley co-anchor the program; correspondents includes original Daily Show player Brian Unger.

sunflower.gifBill O’Reilly asked, “Why can’t I be a role model for gays?” to a bewildered activist promoting Gay History Month as a way to highlight positive role models for gay youth.

Country singer Sara EvansTom Delay’s fave — said in a taped interview on Dancing with the Stars that the welfare of her son was the reason she quit the show. The 100 nude photos of her husband Craig Schelske “in a state of arousal,” mentioned in her recently filed divorce papers, played no role whatsoever, we’re guessing.

Pat Buchanan, on MSNBC’s Scarborough Country, called the Air America radio station “now-defunct,” after its recent bankruptcy filing. The New Republic’s Michael Crowley agreed that that station was a “failed attempt.”

Rosie O’Donnell’s recurring character on Nip/Tuck, who will eventually be spun off to star in her own show, said that she wipes her ass with $100 bills. Now that’s capitalism!

Jon Stewart, after noting that every POTUS — save Zachory Taylor, until last night — has been mentioned during the Daily Show’s ten year run, welcomed the always lovely Amy Sedaris. Party guests have shown up at her house with sunflowers, which she hates. John “the Puritan” Ashcroft, whom Sedaris said she’s dated, will be on the program this evening. Set your Tivo now!

Stephen Colbert celebrated his one year anniversary by noting that less than 50 percent of American households are getting married.

That was the message for Dems in this election cycle straight from political writer David Mark on the Daily Show tonight, promoting his new book, “Going Dirty: The Art of Negative Campaigning.” When Jon Stewart asked Mark about Bob Woodward’s still number one “State of Denial,” he commented with a smile on his face that the veteran WaPo journalist is a like a “weather vane” who covers the Bush administration based on whichever way the political wind is blowing. You can catch more of Mark’s political observations when he debuts later this fall with the new Capitol Leader newspaper.
