The most intriguing part of the new Wall Street Journal interview with President Jimmy Carter is perhaps not that he called Barack Obama “extraordinary,” as CNN is currently highlighting, but that Carter didn’t pull a full Teddy Kennedy and throw an endorsement behind the junior Senator. It is well-known (in Washington circles, at least) that the Clintons have not always been the greatest fans of Carter, nor he of them. In fact, controversial politicking by Carter while president may have played a primary factor in one of Bill Clinton’s few political losses in his Arkansas home state decades ago.

The ramifications of Dennis Kucinich’s shocking revelation that he saw a UFO while visiting Shirley MacLaine never seem to end. In this week’s Democratic debate, the congressman pulled Jimmy Carter into the mess, saying that he knew for a fact that the former president had seen a UFO, too. And now the media has pressed poor Carter on it.

“When I was back as a peanut farmer in southwest Georgia, I and about 25 others saw something in the air that changed colors and was round and came and left,” Carter said in an interview with CNN’s John Roberts today. “We couldn’t figure out what it was.” Read more…

“I seriously believe we have to start asking questions about his mental health,” Dennis Kucinich told the Philadephia Inquirer’s editorial board today regarding President George Bush’s psychiatric condition. “There’s something wrong. He does not seem to understand his words have real impact.”

Kucinich, you’ll recall, recently saw a UFO, according to his good pal actor Shirley MacLaine. After which time he reportedly said he felt “a connection in his heart and heard directions in his mind.”

Carter says in the forthcoming “Gonzo: The Life of Hunter S. Thompson” that his staff “tried to schedule certain times for [Hunter] to interview me along with other journalists, but Hunter felt he should be given top priority. He threatened my press secretary, Jody Powell, and one night he even built a fire in front of Jody’s hotel room door in an attempt to smoke him out.”

Wonder if this would work with President Bush? We know just DC journalist who’s ruthless enough to test the hypothesis: Patrick Gavin.

After renewing their wedding vows yesterday John and Elizabeth Edwards took a break from the campaign trail to celebrate their 30th anniversary by eating at Wendy’s for dinner.

The Reliable Source reports that he had a cheeseburger and iced tea, while she had chili and a Frosty.

Meanwhile, President Jimmy Carter and wife Rosalyn stopped by a Virginia McDonald’s yesterday afternoon for the second time in less than a week.

He reportedly ordered a sundae and some coffee. After they finished eating, the elderly power couple were spotted smooching.

This is not power food, people! But it is, apparently, romance food.

As Jimmy Carter left office, he proposed changing the Constitution to provide one six-year presidential term with no re-election, arguing that this was enough time to get something done without having to pander for votes to stay in office.
