TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — The estranged wife of former New Jersey governor James McGreevey says published reports that she engaged in sexual trysts with McGreevey and a campaign aide aren’t true.

Dina Matos McGreevey says in an e-mail to The Associated Press that the reports are “completely false.”

Did you catch Dina Matos McGreevey on the cable news networks last week decrying the hypocrisy of former New Yorker Gov. Eliot Spitzer for hooking up with hookers? The ex-wife of Jim McGreevey must have seemed like a pretty good expert to dish on such a tawdry subject. After all, who can forget the spectacle of her standing by her man in 2004 when McGreevey resigned as New Jersey’s governor after revealing he was involved in gay relationships?

Turns, out, though, that Dina may be just as big a hypocrite.

“A former driver and aide to former New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevey yesterday made the bombshell claim that Dina Matos McGreevey must have always known her husband was gay - because he was the other man in bed with them,” the New York Post reports.

“She’s framed herself as a victim - yet she was a willing participant,” Teddy Pedersen, the governor’s former driver, tells the newspaper. “She had complete control over what happened in her relationship. She was there, she knew what was happening, she made the moves. We all did. It’s disgusting to watch her play the victim card.”

According to the report, “the threesomes began in the late 1990s, while Dina and Jim were dating, continued after their October 2000 marriage, and had ended by the time McGreevey was elected governor in November 2001.”

“He liked watching me, and she would watch me while she was [performing sex acts] with Jim,” Pedersen is quoted as saying. “In my opinion, me being a part of their sexual relationship enhanced it for both of them.”

Funny Dina didn’t mention any of that last week.

We’ve grown so tired of gabbing on about male gossip columnists, including Lloyd Grove, Paul Bedard and the Examiner newbies, that we decided to cure our Cocktober blues with –what else — a visit with Karen Feld.  Yes, she and her pup Campari are the only souls that we can always count on to make us smile as the weather turns to pumpkins.

And thank goodness we did. Always on the hunt for good gossip, Feld recently caught up with Joan Rivers who told her all about her new BRAVO show modeled after Barbara Walters’ The View — that will star all gay men (and Rivers, too).

“Our show, called ‘Straight Talk,’ will be me and four wonderful, wonderful, wonderful gay men—I went through (I swear) 5,000 to find them—plus former New Jersey Governor Jim McGreevey, who’ll be coming on as our special correspondent for politics and current events,” the QVC queen recently wrote on her blog. ”He’s adorable, funny, and at a real crossroads in his life.”

Rivers explained to Feld that McGreevey is the first she signed on to do the program, and her people consider it to be a “real coup.” No word yet on what Mrs. McGreevey thinks.

BHR hears that David Letterman was surprised and peeved before today’s afternoon taping upon learning that former NJ Governor Jim McGreevey would be a no-show for the second time in just a week.

On tonight’s show, a perplexed Letterman will explain that “we had invited the governor to be here, he said he would be here, we were all very excited that he was going to be here and then he stopped calling. They just stopped calling. They left us numbers that were unplugged, we couldn’t get a hold of him. He said, ‘Oh no, we’re coming, don’t worry, we’re coming,’ and that’s the last we heard of him… I hope he’s okay.”

McGreevey did Paula Zahn, for Pete’s sake. What is up with this?

NYDN’s Lloyd Grove provides the scoop today regarding the former lover of Sixth and I Streets and his apparent fear of David Letterman:

Why did former New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevey, who’s pushing a steamy book about his secret life as a “gay American,” cancel his “Top 10″ reading on “The Late Show With David Letterman”? McGreevey was scheduled to go on tonight, but he told the Daily News: “I think it was a scheduling problem.” Insiders told me that McGreevey might have gotten a case of cold feet, though I doubt Letterman would have had him read Tuesday night’s “Top 10 Signs Your Husband Is Gay” - which included: “7. Your name: Jodi; name he calls out during sex: Lou,” “4. During ‘Brokeback Mountain,’ he mumbles, ‘It didn’t happen exactly like that,’ and “1. Says he got rear-ended, but the car looks fine.” A Letterman spokesman told me that they hope McGreevey will reschedule for next week. 

Lloyd, please keep stickin’ it to McGreevey until you get to the bottom of this madness.

We couldn’t view the former NJ Gov. Jim McGreevey on Oprah today (we do work, after all), but we’re betting that he probably pissed off a lot of D.C. closeted gay guys with this revelation:

The only place where I had ever found any real pleasure in these encounters was in Washington, during my law-school years. At the juncture of Sixth and I Streets, just around the corner from Judiciary Square, there was an abandoned synagogue and a narrow alley leading to the long-forgotten gardens in back. Every night, rain or shine, this hidden pocket of Washington filled with men just like me—almost all of them wearing business suits and, on most of their left hands, proof that they’d made the same compromises I had. We were the power brokers and backroom operatives and future leaders of America. We just happened to be gay.
