patrick-gavin.PNGPicture at right is local media darling Patrick Gavin. For those of you just tuning in, he’s a gossip reporter for both The Examiner and FishbowlDC. We’ve long dissected and translated his work — which has made some people mad sometimes. Which we think is quite funny!

Lately, things have turned more personal. People have seen him jogging around town in an apparent effort to ward off heart disease, so we told you about that. People have been questioning his dance skills, so we showed you a video. People have been asking about possible ties to the Dennis Kucinich campaign…oh wait, we haven’t said anything about that — yet.

Today, we take you in a new direction. It’s time to assess Gavin’s dress and overall appearance at the big Meet the Press anniversary party earlier this week. Word is, he desperately didn’t want his picture snapped, but we still managed to land our hands on one (again, it’s the pic at right). So, what do you think? Should he have sported a jacket? What about his teeth? Like the blue shirt? Why doesn’t he button the top button? You tell us now.

patrick1.PNGToday in media elite sightings, a tipster says that he or she caught Patrick Gavin, of Fishbowl DC and Examiner fame, huffing and puffing in an apparent attempt to slim down. From the always-anonymous tip box:

I just saw Patrick Gavin jogging through the streets of Glover Park, trying (desperately) to get in shape.

Three observations:

1. Total fashion victim. Who jogs in basketball shorts and a huge headband other than my grandfather??

2. He is VERY overweight. At least 260 pounds. Fat legs and everything.

3. I hope he made it home alive. The way he was sweating and huffing, I got a little scared for him.

Well! At least he’s trying, which is more than we can say for his attempts at gossip blogging most days. Right?

Patrick Gavin and Jeff Dufour, those pretty gossip boys over at the Examiner, have penned a second item in less than a month on Jeff Gannon’s book, which, according to our own reporting at Radar, has been selling less well than Gannon has hoped. So! The question begs to be asked: Are Gavin and Dufour in bed with Gannon?

We missed this City Paper nugget from a few days back, but we find it funny nonetheless that seemingly everyone — whether they read the rag, or not — is mad at the The Examiner: Read more…

Examiner’s Yeas and Nays column has gone on hiatus for two weeks:

Yeas & Nays will be off for the next two weeks, returning on Aug. 27 with more people, power and politics from inside the Beltway. Thanks for reading during our first year, and enjoy the rest of your summer!

Expect more blogging at FishbowlDC from Patrick Gavin who takes credit for half of the Examiner’s column each day along with his partner in crime Jeff Dufour.

The Examiner offered up a less-than-flattering portrayal of the recent Barack Obama-themed date auction and mixer, which took place earlier this week at SPANK nightclub.

“Looks like crushes don’t quite bring the media-mongering clout they once did, seeing how Wednesday night’s ‘Bid on your Crush for Obama’ date auction party fizzled faster than Fred Thompson’s campaign donations,” wrote Examiner reporter Mike Isaac. ”Where did you go, Obama Girl?”

Event organizer James McBride tells Bid Head DC that the coverage amounted to a “dick move” and he was surprised to see some facts left out. McBride also shared an e-mail he sent to Isaac, detailing his qualms:

Considering that one person, not “Generation Obama,” hosted and raised $1,700 by himself via a low-dollar fundraiser….I think you’re portrayal was way off.  I expressed disappointment that it wasn’t bigger, but calling people “brats” who care about changing our country?  What makes someone a brat anyway….because they went to college?

Anyway, find any other candidate with a similar event that can raise as much via grassroots efforts and no headliner and you will prove to me how unsuccessful last night was.  Thanks for not mentioning the $175 either.

Anyway, when Generation Obama is launched you will have plenty of impressive things to write about.

The campaign will officially launch on August 25.

Filed under: Examiner, Elections, Ron Paul

Despite Ron Paul’s increasing notoriety, the Washington Examiner is still giving him plenty of flack

They’re short!

They’re quirky!

They’re prone to the occasional head-scratching sound bite!

And they’re both badly trailing in the 2008 presidential polls …

In other words, they’re perfect for each other!

On Tuesday, we asked GOP candidate Ron Paul which Democratic candidate he most relates to.

Ever the politician, Paul hemmed and hawed and threw out the requisite caveats and disclaimers (there weren’t any candidates “that would be real close” to his political views, Paul said), but then surprised us by throwing out a name: Dennis Kucinich.

“Dennis and I do” agree “about the Iraq war,” Paul said. “He’s been very consistent. … I give him a lot of credit.”

Heck, if you add up their polling numbers, they might even meet that 5 percent threshold to qualify for federal matching funds!

Pathetic:

Departing partiers received gift bags that included RockStar energy drink, a bottle of Ron Jeremy Hot Sauce, a Cadillac key chain and other items not fit for enumeration in a family newspaper.

We sure wouldn’t want to be a part of that family!

The Examiner/FishbowlDC gossip explains:

Here’s what TMZDC doesn’t have going for it…

…it’s hard to find gossipers not already taken.
…it’s hard to find gossipers willing to do the kind of stories TMZ wants them to do.
…Wonkette already kind has a monopoly on that market.
…Washington isn’t always that interesting…most of the great items that TMZ foresees publishing are already being scouted out by Washington’s 10+ gossip mongers.
…in order to do TMZDC well, you have to not care about ever working in this town ever again. Those kind of folks are almost impossible to find in Washington, which generally plays it very safe.

Still, those reasons didn’t prevent him from interviewing for a job there, a reputable birdie, or two, tells us.

campari.jpgCampari Feld, just back from covering this year’s Westminster Dog Show, has provided a detailed dispatch of the 3rd Annual Black Tie & Tails gala (as told to his mom, Karen Feld) to The Alexandria Times. Some doggone good tidbits:

Alexandria Rep. Jim Moran — who co-sponsored a bill barring dog fur imports from China — and two-month-old Little Lulu stopped to chat. “She’s named after my wife and loves to snuggle,” said Moran. “She sleeps on a pillow between us.” Moran added cautiously, “We waited until we had been married a year to get her.” This evening was for and about dogs but Moran did comment on the Democrats’ control of the congress: “At least people in Northern Virginia will know we’re not crazy and that our priorities – envisioning diplomacy and investing in education – are different from those of the White House.”

The highlight of my evening was meeting pet psychic Diane Roadcap of Springfield. She actually knew what I was thinking. She talked to me and translated symbols that I gave her. I told her that “I have my mom wrapped around my paw, and I feel like a little celebrity.” Roadcap told my mom that I was showing her “ribbons.” She said that I come from a line of champions. She’s right, but I wondered how she knew that. She told me that my purpose in life is to be a “healer, and I should be doing some kind of therapy work.” She also told my mom that I showed her “airplanes,” which she interpreted as a fondness for travel. I am a well-traveled guy since I accompany my mom all the time.

No word on how much the pampered pooch gets paid for his insights, but hopefully it’s more than those kids at Yeas & Nays. He’s a better writer!
