As Harold Ford Jr. preps for his upcoming marriage to Emily Threlkeld, he may want to also be thinking about how to appease some black voters in his home state of Tennesse — if, that is, he ultimately wants to be elected as governor there, as insiders have said.

In reaction to his proposal last month, several African-American voters have been asking in various Internet forums why he didn’t choose a black mate.

“Why is he doing this to his people?” one woman who claimed to have dated him in the past has asked Big Head DC. “I am hurt, and we should all be angry.”

Ford’s connection to his heritage has long been questioned. “If you take a big hypodermic needle, stuck it in a brothers arm, and sucked all the Hip Hop out of him, you would be left with Harold Ford Jr.,” one blogger wrote in April. “No flavor. No sista. No courage. Second class white boy. Post Civil Rights Negro.”

The politician has not responded to requests for comment to date, but some say he had hope to project a more “settled image” by getting married.

Cindy Adams, the aging New York Post gossip doyenne, got a few facts wrong in her recent write-up of Harold Ford, Jr.’s engagement to fashionista Emily Threlkeld:

GENTS in love brings me to New York businessman Harold Ford, former congressman from Tennessee who is also a maybe senator from Tennessee. He is also, as of Friday, the fiancé of fashionista Emily Threlkeld. After their three-year relationship, bachelor Harold was to surprise her in Paris and propose and phone me right afterward at 3 p.m. New York time. He called 7:30.

“She was an hour late for dinner because she’s at the collections working for Carolina Herrera,” he told me. “I had champagne and a whole party waiting at the Bar Vendome at the Ritz. When she finally arrived she said she had to go back to the hotel for her charger because her phone was dying.”

The future groom gave her his BlackBerry. Also an engagement ring. The future bride is now about to give him a springtime wedding date. And a blessing on their heads, mazel tov, mazel tov.

Harold Ford, Jr., the former congressman from Tennessee, is gearing up to sponsor an upcoming educational event with his new fiancee, fashionista Emily Threlkeld, Big Head DC has learned. The power couple is helping to plan a glitzy benefit for NYC’s East Harlem School to be held on Nov. 8.

Washington insiders expect Ford to continue to ramp up his social schedule with his new first lady by his side as he preps to soon run for governor of his home state. As we first told you in July, Tennessee’s governor seat will be ripe for the plucking in 2010, and our sources said then that Ford has been very keen on running for the position. He’s also looking to have children soon, we’ve been told.

During Ford’s failed run for Senate in 2006, some opposing members of the GOP attempted to paint him as a philandering bachelor. In the past, he has been linked with infamous NYC D-lister Julia Allison, who had been caught up in a shifty plagiarism scandal during her Washington college days.

Big Head DC readers learned some time ago that one of Washington’s most eligible princes of politics Harold Ford, Jr. is dating a pretty blond gal named Emily Threlkeld. So why did the New York Post fail to mention her in a new gossip item about a recent Ford romp about NYC:

One woman’s not enough for 37-year-old bachelor Harold Ford Jr.. The former Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in Tennessee was holed up at Blue Ribbon Sushi on Sullivan Street with three blondes on Wednesday night. “They all stayed until 2 a.m. singing and dancing, and he was pretty tipsy,” one onlooker snickered. For Ford’s sake, let’s hope none of his dinner guests goes on to hit Internet stardom via kissing and telling.

The Internet star in question, of course, is one Julia Allison — a daily Gawker fave — and former DC controversy-prone journalist. But she’s definitely not blond, so we’re pretty sure that Ford must have been connecting with some other ladies the other evening. And if one of them wasn’t Threlkeld, he’s definitely got some explaining to do.

Tennessee’s governor seat will be ripe for the plucking in 2010, and word is that former Rep. Harold Ford, Jr. - who’s whipped up a lot of frenzy on Big Head DC lately with revelations about his saucy love life - is interested in the job.

The New York Post reported over the July 4th holiday that an NBC source asked Ford what would be next on his agenda, and he reportedly replied, “I’m gonna be governor.”

Big Head DC has now spoken to sources close to Ford who’ve asked not to be identified, with two confirming that he’s “definitely” considering a run.

Conventional Beltway wisdom placed Ford running for Congress again soon (he ran a failed bid for Senate in 2006), but our sources say he thinks he’s young enough to build up his political career in the Tennessee State House and then try to make the jump to the U.S. Senate again. They say he also may be looking to start a family soon (perhaps with Emily Threlkeld), and he may view the governor’s mansion as a more stable place to do that.
