Larry Flynt, the publisher of Hustler magazine, is mad. Damn mad.

Two months ago Sen. David Vitter (R-Lousiana) took a weeklong vacation after Flynt’s investigative journalist Dan Moldea revealed that he had used the services offered by ”DC Madam” Deborah Jeane Palfrey.

The Senator quickly apologized before television cameras with his wife Wendy Vitter at his side, saying that his adulterous behavior had happened only one time.

Then, he returned to the Senate, literally received high-fives from his Republican colleagues, and settled back in to business as usual.

Meanwhile, Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho) was outed for soliciting sex from a male in a bathroom in Minnesota in the latter part of this August. In record time, almost all Republican leadership denounced him, and top officials, including Sen. John McCain, asked for his resignation. February 27 turned out to be a very lucky birth date for the Washington reporter who helped Hustler’s Larry Flynt uncover Sen. David Vitter’s sexual sins.

We spoke this afternoon with Dan Moldea, the famous DC-based investigative reporter who does contract work for Flynt, and he detailed how he was able to so quickly hit Congressional sex scandal pay dirt soon after a government restraining order was released on Deborah Jeane’s Palfrey’s phone records on July 5.

That day, Moldea rushed to his house with a CD filled with the phone records given to him by Palfrey’s lawyer Montgomery Blair Sibley, and he then began the daunting task of reverse checking thousands upon thousands of numbers through several search engines.

His eyes soon grew tired, and he might have given up for another day’s work, if not for an arbitrary goal he set for himself. He would get through his birthday.

Bingo! February 27 was coincidentally a day that Vitter was shown to have made a call from his home number in Washington to Palfrey’s escort service, Pamela Martin & Associates.

Soon, Moldea placed a call to Flynt, and the team had uncovered its first political hypocrite of the season.

Big Head DC has learned from publisher Larry Flynt that Hustler’s $1 million bounty for politico sexploits revealed is totally separate from his role in uncovering the Sen. David Vitter scandal, which Deborah Jeane Palfrey’s phone records exposed. In other words, Flynt did not pay Palfrey for this information. (But there is still a connection between the duo: Palfrey is working with Flynt’s top political reporter Dan Moldea on a book about her escort service.)

We recently told you about investigative reporter Wayne Madsen’s displeasure with Radar Online’s characterization of him as a “lonely” blogger in light of his reporting on a possible Dick Cheney connection to “Washington Madam” Deborah Jeane Palfrey. Now reporter Dan Moldea, who helped Hustler editor Larry Flynt expose former GOP House Rep. Bob Livingston’s extramarital affair, is taking the publication for to task for naming him as a slueth in Flynt’s new efforts to uncover sex dirt in DC.

After Flynt appeared on Hardball earlier this week and named Moldea as one of his detectives on the ground in Washington, Radar said Moldea was “fibbing” because he had previously told editors there that he had no role in the current investigation.

Moldea is now angry by what he considers false reporting by Radar.

“[T]here is a lot of confusion surrounding these matters, which has been exacerbated by Radar Online’s flat-out erroneous headline and conclusion about me,” Moldea told Big Head DC on Wednesday.

The reporter continues to deny being involved in the current investigation, but says he has no further comment at this time.

An interesting side note to the story: Moldea was seen by BHDC sources lunching in downtown DC with one Deborah Jeane Palfrey in late May.
