Yesterday we told you how the DC health department is giving out condoms that many Washingtonians think look like they are wrapped in cheap paper, rather than foil or plastic, like Trojans, Durex or whatever brand Sen. Larry Craig uses in the men’s bathrooms.

Well! David Mariner, a blogger over at Fight HIV in DC, seems to think the health officials are getting somewhat of a bum wrap. (DO NOT pardon that pun.)

“Big Head DC uses the headline ‘DC Government Gives Out Condoms Wrapped in Paper,’” he writes. “In reality, they are the same foil-style packages used by many condom manufacturers.”

Condom wrappers don’t have to look cool, they just shouldn’t rip.

That’s the lesson the government of the District of Columbia has learned after thousands upon thousands of condoms it provided free to city residents to curb HIV-AIDS have been returned because of widespread complaints that their paper packaging is easily torn and might render the condoms useless.

“I got one of those free condoms wrapped in yellow paper,” a commenter on a DC health-related discussion Web site recently said. “And the damn thing ripped in my purse. Ain’t no way I’m putting that thing on my man now.”
