Sen. Chuck Hagel will announce on Monday that he is retiring from the Senate and that he will not join the race for the White House in 2008, the Omaha World-Herald newspaper reports.
The news is unexpected and means the Republican Party will be scrambling to another seat in 2008 at a time when the GOP will already be defending more Senate seats than Democrats.
All three of Nebraska’s Congressional districts are fairly solid Republican, though the 3rd district saw an unusual amount for the Democratic candidate in the last election.
Hagel reportedly told Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell of his decision on Friday morning, and his staff learned of his surprising decision yesterday afternoon.

Either Dick Cheney is lying, or Scooter Libby is lying. Both scenarios sound credible, but only one can be true.
