Big Head DC can confirm that the fallen American Idol star has arrived back in Washington to finish taking classes this summer after her time away with Ryan Seacrest. Hopefully the always alluring architecture student will stay out of the WWII Memorial fountains this time (or, rather, hopefully NOT)!

Springfield, Va.: Has Catholic University released any statement on the Antonella Barba photos? if they are her, would the university take any action? wasn’t there something last year with photos of their girls lacrosse team?

First, our answer: Yes — to Big Head DC. Now Amy’s:

Amy Argetsinger: Catholic University has said, in effect, that this whole darn thing is sad. They also drew a distinction between the ordinary crazy-girl-spring-break photos (”Girls Gone Wild Lite,” Lisa de Moraes called them) and the X-rated ones. Of the first set of photos, CUA spokesman Victor Nakas said, “They’re not the most flattering but not the most earthshaking in their significance.”

Beyond that, he told de Moraes: “The second set of pictures, the ones that are more explicit — and I want to underscore that it has not been proved those are actually of Ms. Barba, the ones that are purported to be of her — are sad and unfortunate regardless of the person being depicted…. We’re saddened for Ms. Barba and her family and friends in these circumstances that have turned an exciting opportunity into an embarrassing moment in their lives.”

I think it’s apples/oranges with the girls lacrosse team photos, which, if I recall correctly, showed photos of the entire team whooping it up with male strippers, which got them into trouble because it appeared to be part of a team initiation, raising questions about hazing, etc., relevant to the school’s oversight of an official sanctioned activity. A world apart from what one student does in her personal life.

Big Head DC caught up with Victor Nakas, spokesman for the Catholic University of America tonight, and he confirmed that the institution is not currently taking steps to expel Antonella Barba, a junior at the university majoring in architecture.

Barba, a current star on American Idol, has found herself caught up in recent days within a tawdry sex scandal involving nude, explicit pictures of herself, as well as pictures of her allegedly performing oral sex on a male.

American Idol has thus far stood by Barba, but it was not known until tonight whether her ultra-religious university would also stand by her.

Nakas, a spokesman for the university, said that no actions are currently planned to expel Barba. “I make reference to federal law, which protects the rights of our students, he told BHDC. “She has the right to privacy.” 

Nakas added, however, that he did not know whether a student who posted explicit pictures of herself or himself on the Internet could hypothetically be subjected to punishment. He said he would have to review such an incident with student affairs officials.

While Catholic University officials have yet to return calls from Big Head DC regarding the Antonella Barba scandal, they have unleashed a wickedly wise campaign that asks students to use their hands to watch over each other during this week’s campus spring break. 

The campaign centers on more than 150 “mysterious posters” that appeared throughout campus starting in early February. “The posters featured a graphic of a fist with the pinky extended in ‘pinky promise’ fashion, which simply read, ‘i promise,’” according to a release from the university. “They were intended to cause students to ask questions, to want to know what ’i promise’ was about.”

One question we immediately had: What the fuck?

And - lo! - we got an answer:

“Followed by the linking of the pinkies on each party’s right hand, a ‘pinky promise’ between friends can be more binding than a handshake for some CUA students,” according to the release. “Perhaps that is why the pinky came to symbolize the promise that approximately 950 CUA students made to each other in the weeks leading up to spring break…”

No word yet on whether Barba participated in any pinky promises before skipping town to sing on American Idol. (We’d ask CU students, but all of them are currently away from campus, getting drunk and participating in orgies.)

The Catholic University student was quoted in the WaPo earlier this month saying that she only wears men’s deodorant because “girls’ deodorant isn’t strong enough.” Well, to be fair, no deodorant is made to hold up under the heavy fountain spray of WWII Memorials.

Catholic University has not yet responded to requests from Big Head DC for comment on the Antonella Barba nude WWII Memorial picture/blow job scandal, but officials there published the following release on February 16, pledging their support: 

CUA Junior Vies to be America’s Next Idol

If things go well for one CUA junior, America will soon be filled with a whole lot of “fantonellas.”

That’s the punny nickname for fans of “American Idol” contestant and CUA architecture major Antonella Barba, who has advanced to the top 24 finalists vying to be the country’s next big pop star.

The Point Pleasant, N.J., native first won over the “Idol” television audience — and judges — during the New York City auditions. Her journey through the selection process with childhood best friend, Amanda Coluccio, has been chronicled throughout the audition episodes of the show, from New York to Hollywood. Coluccio did not advance past the first Hollywood cuts, though Barba made it into the top 40 and then, last Wednesday, into the top 12 female contestants.

So far, Barba’s fate has been in the hands of the show’s three judges, but from this point forward, her fortunes will be determined by “American Idol” viewers, who will vote each night for their favorite contestants by phone. She can probably count on a fair number of calls from her college campus: Friends and fellow CUA students will gather in The Edward J. Pryzbyla University Center for viewings of the live episodes that feature Barba.

Barba will next perform Wednesday, Feb. 21 (8 p.m. E.T.), on FOX. The lowest male and female vote-getters will be eliminated from the competition during a live show on Thursday, Feb. 22 (8 p.m. E.T.), on FOX.

For now, fantonellas can show their support for Barba on the Web site antonella-barba.org — one of three Internet sites that have already cropped up to keep tabs on Barba’s trek toward singer-stardom.
