More comment fascism from DCist… I guess Sommer Mathis can’t handle criticism. Maybe she should chose a new profession instead of stifling free speech!

Indeed, Mathis says within the post that guest comments are often insulting and/or obnoxious — thus, the site is limiting them. She adds that the DCist site will “probably” do away with guest comments altogether in the future.

And guest commenters are furious. For instance:

She’s suffering through a midlife crisis, kids. And it’s scary!

Figuring out how to manage to have someone spend the night with you for the first time in one of those thin, weird twin mattresses is a right of passage in this great country of ours. Kids these days are soft enough as it is without schools choosing to coddle them into believing they deserve to sleep comfortably. This is an outrage of the first order.

Oh my! It’s come to Big Head DC’s attention that Endless Simmer writer Stefanie Gans is the Michael Vick of the DC food scene.  Why?

Well, because she eats dogs!  Just look at her “about” page where she writes she likes eating “egg and cheese on a begal” and a “begal and cream cheese.”  Anyone who eats Snoopy has got to be just plain mean.

And! On her MySpace photos comments, a friend writes about how people used to debate whether she wore a bra to class. Maybe if she’d paid more attention to both the letters on her bra size and the letters in the alphabet, well, Snoopy might be alive and well. It’s sad how a typo can result in a dead dog.

Herein lies the problem with MySpace. Just because YOU keep your pics clean, Stafanie, doesn’t mean an IDIOT FRIEND won’t post a revealing one of you when they make a comment.  That’s Stefanie flashing (stage right). Apparently, she also works for some women’s business group, so the pic is pretty much all the proof you need to know how to get ahead in Washington.

Again, poor Snoopy!

One of the biggest problems in journalism occurs when people who practice the craft do it for free. This phenomenon makes reporting and writing a much less valued profession in general, and everyone, especially younger freelancers, end up having to lower their rates. Can you imagine a doctor — even a young one — offering his or her services for free?

But, apparently, the DCist blog (we don’t read it, but someone insists on tipping us off about their scandalous ways…hi, Mom!) doesn’t have a problem with the ludicrous practice. Yes, editor Sommer Mathis just put out this call for free writers:

It’s back to school time, and that means we’re once again recruiting new writers to become part of our growing team of city bloggers. As you know, we aren’t able to pay our contributors — so please don’t apply unless you’re ready to do it for the love of exploring D.C., engaging in important debates about the direction of the city, or are just the kind of person who’s happy enough to see your name in big letters on the intertubes.

Sheesh, you’d think she’d know better considering that she recently became the first paid editor of the struggling blog….. after informing her boss Jake Dobkin that she couldn’t make the gig work without a few pennies thrown her way. Boycott DCist!

It’s pretty much common knowledge in the blogosphere that Gawker Media employees like to bitch about their work and pay conditions. Each and every blogger in the network, it seems, has complained at one point or another about the number of blog postings their blog boss Nick Denton requires of them per day (what is it, like 8?).

And don’t get them started on their salaries! It was publicized in the New York Times Magazine in 2004 that Wonkette founding editor Ana Marie Cox started out making a paltry 18K, which sort of explains why she quickly jumped the shark to the mainstream folds of TIME magazine in 2006. Current top editors at Gawker pull in about 70K, with bonuses, but that’s not enough to make many of them happy, which partially explains why one of Gawker’s best media writers Doree Shafrir is leaving for the New York Observer this week.

Which brings us to poor, overworked Alex Pareene and Ken Layne at Wonkette — who, insiders speculate are making a bit less than 70K, but, let’s face it, are they really worth more than a bit less than 70K? Read more…

As all good Big Head DC readers know, a local blogger who goes by the moniker Princess Sparkle Pony replaced Wonkette editor Alex Pareene yesterday. “She” did a helluva job, as many of her pals have noted, but now a problem bigger than a rained out horse race has arisen: Wonkette did not — and has not to date — given her a byline for her services. Yes, it’s true. For the entire day yesterday, in which she blogged her wholesome heart out, she went nameless in all of her posts. Which is odd, since most other temporary guest editors have received a byline.

Or maybe he just couldn’t take Big Head DC’s relentless teasing re: his wacky mom.

Whatever it is, Wonkette editor Alex Pareene is on an extended stay in his home state of Minnesota today, and he’s chosen a local blogger known as “Princess Sparkle Pony” (we kid you not) to bat some snark in his absence. The horse has ridden this road before, so we’re sure the blog is in capable hands. Still, let’s hope “her” odd obsession with Condi Rice doesn’t run amok. We know, we know, anything’s got to be better than Pareene, but at least he gives us a pale target to ridicule.
