BHDC 'Amy Argetsinger' File:

Filed under: Journalism, Amy Argetsinger, Washington Post, David Vitter

From the City Paper:

Last July, Post gossip columnist Amy Argetsinger was making some calls on David Vitter, the Louisiana senator whose phone number had shown up in the phone records of the famous “D.C. Madam.” After the story bounced all over the country, a New Orleans madam spoke up with allegations that Vitter had been a client of her brothel.

Argetsinger was all over it, nailing an interview with the Southern madam and pushing it toward publication. But her editor, Steve Reiss, spiked the story on sourcing grounds, arguing that the Post account rested precariously on the word of the New Orleans madam. Says Argetsinger via e-mail: “Reiss was aware that everyone else was writing about her but said that we can’t use that as an excuse—in essence, that the Post had to take the higher moral ground.” Argetsinger rushed to find a replacement item.

The next day, the columnist set out to “revisit” the Vitter issue. She pumped “New Orleans madam” into Google and found that the first story to pop up came from the Post. Turns out that washingtonpost.com had piped into the Web site an AP version of the very same story that a Style editor had just killed.

Argetsinger wasn’t mad; she was encouraged. Now she had an argument for her editors: Hey, if we have the AP story on our site, why can’t we publish our own version? “I guess I was arguing, ‘look, the Post’s already tainted here,’” writes Argetsinger via e-mail. Not tainted enough: When the issue reached the desk of top editor Downie, he sided with Argetsinger’s editor.

“Two different companies and two different standards operating under the same rubric”—that’s how Argetsinger sums it up.

Jackie Kucinich’s behavior at the Dana Milbank party aside, newish Wonkette editor Megan Carpentier had a blast chatting up The Washington Post’s resident gossip, Amy Argetsinger (right). Just look at that grin. Megan’s arrived!

andrea.jpg“Ever wonder how Alan Greenspan managed to land a much younger babe like Andrea Mitchell?” the Reliable Source asks today. Um! We take issue with the premise of that question. The NBC correspondent referred to as a “much younger babe” has got to be a tongue-in-cheek joke, right? Like one of Perez Hilton’s backhanded compliments to the Olsen twins? Either that, or the column’s writers, Amy Argetsinger and Roxanne Roberts, are doing some major suckage of Mitchell’s dried up teats to try to get some dirty milk.

Washington Post’s gossip column, The Reliable Source, is going into overdrive, and will now appear Monday through Friday. Monday used to be a break day for Amy Argetsinger and Roxanne Roberts. The move is widely seen as an attempt to better compete with blogger gossipers who’ve been frequently scooping the column.

Filed under: Reliable Source, Amy Argetsinger, Washington Post, Ted Kennedy

argetsinger.jpgYes, that was Washington Post Reliable Source columnist Amy Argetsinger schlepping around with a handheld video recorder at last nights “Grammys on the Hill.” And, while she’s a respectable journalist, her intentions were no different than the TMZ.com videographers who desperately want to snap a pic of Britney’s cooch or Lindsay Lohan with coke running down her nose.

Except Argetsinger’s target was of a different sort. She wanted to get a video of Sen. Ted Kennedy making an ass of himself as part of an “all-star” group sing-a-long of “We Are the World.” Well! Looks like she got her mark. But did she lose some dignity in the process?

The writer some of you know as the DCeiver (aka Jason Linkins) explains that he’s developed crushes on a few of his acquaintances, including Ryan Avent, Amy Argetsinger and Rachel Sklar. (The latter two “make for a thinking, drinking pair of media titans I refer to simply as SKLARGETSINGER,” he says).

jason-linkins.JPGBut there’s a lot more psycho-babble going on behind Linkins’ fantasy-filled eyes than he lets on. For one, Avent used to be his editor when they both worked at DCist. For two, Argetsinger recently wrote up an item that was flattering to Linkins. And for three, Sklar is now one of his bosses/pals over at The Huffington Post.

So, all you have to do to get some of that now famous Linkins love: Get him to work for you, or write something gushy about him, and he’s bound to find you fabulous. After penning this drivel, we can’t wait to receive a pretty bouquet from Linkins — hopefully later today!

Reliable Source is off the next two weeks “reading trashy novels and daydreaming about George Clooney,” according to Amy Argetsinger and Roxanne Roberts. No new Washington Post gossip, apparently, until after Labor Day.

We’ll be here, though!

wed.jpgFrom Rox and Amy

Getting hitched: Conservative pundit Andrew Sullivan and his partner of three years, artist-actor Aaron Tone. The New York Observer set off a blogger guessing game yesterday when it reported that Sullivan is making it legal with an actor appearing in Studio Theatre’s production of “The Pillowman,” whom it erroneously ID’d as simply “Eric.”

No big mystery: Sullivan, 43, and Tone, 31, have been domestic partners in D.C. for two years, and will marry in Provincetown, Mass., this August. The couple originally planned to wed last year until a “book crisis” postponed the event. “There’s no way to pull off a book and a wedding at the same time,” Sullivan told us. No word what role their beloved dogs Dusty and Eddy will play in the small ceremony, but they’re “definitely” in the wedding party.

Filed under: Reliable Source, Amy Argetsinger, Roxanne Roberts, BHDC, Catholic University, Antonella Barba

From Rox and Amy’s live chat today:

Springfield, Va.: Has Catholic University released any statement on the Antonella Barba photos? if they are her, would the university take any action? wasn’t there something last year with photos of their girls lacrosse team?

First, our answer: Yes — to Big Head DC. Now Amy’s:

Amy Argetsinger: Catholic University has said, in effect, that this whole darn thing is sad. They also drew a distinction between the ordinary crazy-girl-spring-break photos (”Girls Gone Wild Lite,” Lisa de Moraes called them) and the X-rated ones. Of the first set of photos, CUA spokesman Victor Nakas said, “They’re not the most flattering but not the most earthshaking in their significance.”

Beyond that, he told de Moraes: “The second set of pictures, the ones that are more explicit — and I want to underscore that it has not been proved those are actually of Ms. Barba, the ones that are purported to be of her — are sad and unfortunate regardless of the person being depicted…. We’re saddened for Ms. Barba and her family and friends in these circumstances that have turned an exciting opportunity into an embarrassing moment in their lives.”

I think it’s apples/oranges with the girls lacrosse team photos, which, if I recall correctly, showed photos of the entire team whooping it up with male strippers, which got them into trouble because it appeared to be part of a team initiation, raising questions about hazing, etc., relevant to the school’s oversight of an official sanctioned activity. A world apart from what one student does in her personal life.

Amy Argetsinger, our fave Reliable Source, defended all DC gossips on MSNBC today against the recent bashing the NY Times’ Mark Leibovich thought we deserved. In fact, she pointed out that four rolls of quarters were recently stolen from Madeleine Albright Mercedes in Georgetown. Yeah, quarters. Four rolls. They could’ve been state secrets, for Pete’s sake! We so matter.
