Ann Althouse provides an update on some possibly shady dealings regarding Obama campaign efforts to get Clinton pledged delegates to switch to Obama. She says that she and her son Chris Cohen received the following e-mail from a supposed Obama camp volunteer, in an attempt to explain away the situation:

Hello Chris (and Ann),

I am a volunteer for the Obama campaign in Texas. I saw this post (via Marc Ambinder), and was surprised, because I thought we were only contacting Obama delegates. That’s what we’ve been in my part of TX, anyway.

http://althouse.blogspot.com/2008/03/in-texas-obama-campaign-tries-to-win.html

So I checked the voter file (screenshot attached), and it looks like there was data entry error. You ended up being coded as BOTH a Hillary Clinton and a Barack Obama delegate. Apparently both the Texas Democratic Party and the Travis County Party added your data, and it looks like one of them made a mistake. I think the postcards are being sent to anyone coded as an Obama delegate, which (mistakenly) includes you. I deleted the Obama delegate code, so you shouldn’t get mistakenly bothered again.

Anyway, have fun at your convention.

Thanks,

Matt

Althouse, for one, seems less than convinced. She continues:

Yeah, have fun, kids. Play at your little democracy thing. Meanwhile — you, you pesky little blogger-connected county delegate — you won’t be seeing any of our mailings anymore. We’ve stricken your name from our list. And if anyone else shows up and complains about Obama mailings to Clinton delegates, we can fix their double-coding too. Now, go off and don’t worry anymore.

Do you trust the caucus process?

They’re not contacting delegates to try to get them to switch. They’re contacting Obama delegates to make sure they show up at the county convention. They’re contacting Obama alternate delegates to make sure they show up. Why would they do this? Because if an Obama delegate doesn’t show up, they replace them with an Obama alternate. If no Obama alternates show up, they replace them with whoever is available.

The same with Clinton delegates. If Clinton delegates don’t show up, and they don’t have alternates, an Obama delegate can take their place. Those the rules, and don’t think Clinton won’t try to take advantage of it.

This blog is becoming really pathetic in its attempts to conjure up conspiracy theories and completely biased non-news.

Poll: Clinton’s negatives reach new high
    Posted: 02:28 PM ET
Clinton and Obama are tied in the latest poll.

(CNN) – The increasingly charged Democratic race for the White House appears to be hurting Hillary Clinton significantly more than Barack Obama, a just-released poll suggests.

According to a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll, the New York senator’s personal approval rating has dropped markedly, and those that hold a negative view of her have reached 48 percent — the highest in that poll since March 2001. Just 37 percent now have a positive view of Clinton — down from 45 percent two weeks ago.

The new poll comes at the end of one of the most hostile months in the Democratic presidential primary race, during which surrogates for both campaigns resigned after uttering controversial statements, and controversy swirled around Obama over past statements by his former pastor, Jeremiah Wright.

But despite fears by some of Obama’s backers that the Wright controversy would take a toll on the Illinois senator and his presidential hopes, the new poll shows his approval rating has remained virtually unchanged at 49 percent. Only 32 percent of Americans give him a negative approval rating.

Meanwhile, in head-to-head matchups Clinton and Obama remain deadlocked for the nomination, each drawing 45 percent among Democratic voters. Both are also statistically tied with John McCain in matchups: Clinton is two points behind the Arizona senator while Obama is two points ahead — both within the poll’s margin of error of 4 percentage points.

    Clinton backers don’t sway Pelosi
    Posted: 03:14 PM ET
Pelosi is sticking to her superdelegate argument.
Pelosi is sticking to her superdelegate argument.

(CNN) – A recent letter from several Hillary Clinton fundraisers to Nancy Pelosi seeking she step back from her contention that superdelegates should support the pledged-delegate leader appears to have had little effect on the House Speaker.

Pelosi spokesman Brendan Daly said late Wednesday the California Democrat stands by her argument that the party’s superdelegates would do damage if they go against the will of voters and hand the nomination to the candidate who finished second among those delegates awarded from the round of caucuses and primaries.

“The speaker believes it would do great harm to the Democratic Party if superdelegates are perceived to overturn the will of the voters,” Daly said. “This has been her position throughout this primary season, regardless of who was ahead at any particular point in delegates or votes.”

The statement comes a day after nearly 20 high-profile Clinton fundraisers strongly criticized Pelosi for that position, arguing instead that the superdelegates “have an obligation to make an informed, individual decision about whom to support and who would be the party’s strongest nominee.”

The fundraisers, who reminded Pelosi in the letter they have been strong contributors to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, also urged the House Speaker to “clarify your position on super-delegates and reflect in your comments a more open view to the optional independent actions of each of the delegates at the National Convention in August.”

“Speaker Pelosi is confident that superdelegates will choose between Sens. Clinton or Obama — our two strong candidates — before the convention in August,” Daly also said. “That choice will be based on many considerations, including respecting the decisions of millions of Americans who have voted in primaries and participated in caucuses.”

Pelosi first expressed her stance in an ABC News interview earlier this month — one that benefits Barack Obama, whose current pledged delegate lead of 171 is virtually insurmountable given the party’s proportional delegation allocations, even if Clinton were to win each of the remaining 10 primary contests.

An Obama spokesman called the Clinton fundraiser’s letter “inappropriate.”

    Hillary Rodham Clinton, 39 percent

    ___

    OF INTEREST:

The two rivals’ standings in the Pew Research Center poll have changed little from late February, the latest indication that so far Obama has weathered the controversy over provocative sermons by his longtime pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright. While Obama has a mostly favorable image among white Democrats, those with unfavorable views about him are likelier to say equal rights for minorities have gone too far and to oppose interracial dating. Almost one in four white Democrats who view Obama unfavorably also think he is Muslim, when in fact he is Christian. Obama and Clinton both continue to hold slender leads nationally in matchups against the all-but-certain Republican candidate, John McCain.

    ___

The Pew poll was conducted March 19-22. It involved telephone interviews with 1,503 adults, including 618 Democratic and Democratic-leaning registered voters. The margin of sampling error was plus or minus 3 percentage points for all adults and 4.5 percentage points for Democratic voters.

PRINCETON, NJ — Barack Obama has edged up in the preferences of national Democratic voters, and now has a 48% to 44% advantage over Hillary Clinton.

Obama’s four percentage point advantage in today’s March 24-26 average is his largest in Gallup Poll Daily tracking since he led Clinton by 50% to 44% in the March 11-13 average. (To view the complete trend since Jan. 2, 2008, click here.)

Voters’ preferences in two hypothetical November general election matchups remain close, with John McCain at 47% to Clinton’s 44%, and McCain’s 45% to Obama’s 44%. The difference between McCain’s 3-point advantage over Clinton as opposed to his 1-point advantage over Obama is not statistically significant, but marks one of the few times when the two races have not had either identical gaps or gaps only a point different. — Frank Newport

Judicial Watch: Obama ‘intended to leave no paper trail’
    By Klaus Marre
    Posted: 03/26/08 01:01 PM [ET]

The president of a prominent watchdog group said Wednesday that he believes Democratic presidential frontrunner Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) “intended to leave no paper trail” during his time in the Illinois Senate.

Judicial Watch, which has been seeking access to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s (D-N.Y.) records from her time in the White House, argued Wednesday that the Illinois senator, who has criticized the former first lady for a lack of openness, has his own “records problem.”

“The more we learn about the Illinois Senator, the more obvious it becomes that he is anything but the ethically upright outsider he purports to be,” said Tom Fitton, the president of Judicial Watch.

The group rose to prominence when it repeatedly took on former President Bill Clinton during his time in office. It also sought records from the Bush administration regarding Vice President Dick Cheney’s energy task force.

In a statement, Fitton noted that his group has sought access to Obama’s records as a state senator and questioned whether the presidential candidate has been forthcoming with regard to what happened to those documents.

He said that “nobody knows where they are, if they exist at all” and claimed that “Obama’s story keeps changing.”

However, the Obama campaign said the senator’s records are available.

“All of Sen. Obama’s correspondence with state agencies and records of requests Obama made to them on behalf of his constituents are available to the public and have been accessed by our opponents and members of the news media,” said Obama spokesman Ben LaBolt. “Illinois State senators have limited staff – Obama did not have a scheduler – and so no detailed record exists of all of his daily activities in Springfield.”

Fitton argues that Obama’s public accounts of what happened to his records do not mesh with information from the Illinois Office of the Secretary of State. He added that the Judicial Watch investigation “suggests” that the senator could have had his records archived in a way that would grant the public access to them.

“It appears that Obama never kept records of his time in the Illinois state legislature, or he discarded them,” Fitton stated. “Either way, he clearly intended to leave no paper trail.”
