Geraldine Ferraro, the Democratic Party’s vice presidential nominee in 1984, has told a California newspaper, “If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position. And if he was a woman he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept.”
And now the Obama campaign is calling on Sen. Hillary Clinton to fire Ferraro as a fundraiser.
“When you wink and nod at offensive statements you’re really sending a signal to your supporters that anything goes,” David Axelrod, the top adviser to Obama, is quoted as saying.
The question remains: was Ferraro wrong?

Freedom of speech…besides she is absolutely right. She didn’t call him a monster. She called it like it is!
I sort of agree with Cathy. Ferraro expressed her own opinion, and added a nice sentiment: “He happens to be very lucky to be who he is.” Barack is lucky — he should stop acting entitled. And now people will call me racist. Well, women have to work twice as hard for 3/4 as much pay. Tell me why the Obama campaign is attacking a pioneering woman? Couldn;t Ferraro claim sexism?
Hillary is a monster, and Powers got fired for speaking the truth! Send Geraldine’s old saggy ass up the river too!
Obama and his camp do not know how to handle the truth. This is true transparency.
Isn’t that what Obama preaches, every single day??
The Obama campaign is angry Power got fired for using a derisive name for Hillary. Ferraro didn’t use a derisive name, nor was she being racist. She was talking about a sad truth. Turn on the sexist news stations to see what I mean.
It is not racist to say Obama is lucky to be running for president — and to be a serious contender — after only 2 tears in Congress. His assention has been God-like.
That was Powers freedom of speech and she got canned for speaking her mind. Geraldine’s spoke her opinion, though freedom of speech, it is demeaning and is equally offensive to what Powers said. Furthermore, if Barack Obama were a white male, Hillary would have been out of the race before TX and OH, after her 11 consecutive losses.
Of course she’s wrong.
If being an African American helps so much, why is Obama the THIRD Black Senate member…EVER? Why do we only have three black governors, when blacks (and mixed race) are 15% of the population? Why have we never had a serious African American Presidential candidate before?
Hm….
Well then, Geraldine, there is one fact I know. You never would have been the VP candidate if you were not a woman.
To Jon: I see what you’re saying, but you discount sexism. There have been over 40 white MALE presidents. Yes, they weren’t black, but they did have a penis, just like Obama. And Obama is just as much white as he is black. But he’s not at all woman.
I think that Geraldine was spot on with her comment everything she said was absolutley true. Smantha Powers is just an nasty venomous witch who for a supposed academic has no common sense as she is transfixed by false prophet Obama.
No, she wasn’t wrong. You’d have to be blind not to see it for the truth that it is. Obama being black does not qualify him to be President of the US. And that’s what he’s running on. Imagine if he becomes our President- no one will be able to critize him at any level lest you’re called a racist. He’s a black empty suit.
I know there’s sexism. But there’s also racism. There are more white men who would vote for Hillary because she was white than Barack because he is a man. And please don’t give me the “he’s half white” argument. Any person in this country knows that if you’re part black, and you look black, you’re black. It’s not a choice that people of mixed race have - it is the sad state of our country.
I’m an Obama supporter, but I would be just as offended if someone said “Hillary Clinton would not be here if she were not a woman.”
It’s time for this country to get beyond race and gender and to vote for the best candidate. There is simply no room for comments like this anymore.
Obama is half white isn’t he?
Hell no it isn’t wrong! Geraldine is absoltely correct. If a white man was running with his credentials and his racists conterparts, he would never be in the position that Obama has risen to within the democratic party.

Correction:
Then Obama and supporters should stop playing the race card. Accept it. What are we the people going to be muzzled during an Obama administration. We’ll see who is really racist, when he fills his cabinet with a bunch of non-whites. Just watch!

Obama didn’t bring up race! He never has! Geraldine did! Give me a quote, a link something that shows Obama using race. If he would have, he would have went the way of Jesse Jackson. But Hillary has used gender, several times. Even in MS…”If you want real change it is time for a women in the White House.” I didn’t know we were taking turns. The best person should be elected to White House, not because of gender or race, and it’s not Hillary!
i am tired of all this. I am tired of Obama. I am tired of Hillary.
Ferraro wasn’t wrong, FWIW. For the Obama campaign to suggest Hillary do anything to Ferraro is insane, too. Most of Obama’s supporters are young and don’t remember how important Ferraro was in American history. Samantha Power’s comments don’t matter. Power was and is a nobody.
I don’t think I’m going to vote for President of the United States. I’ll vote for everything else but these people are not what I want my country to stand for.
Jon: The sad fact is that most people in this country don’t accept sexism as real. They realize racism is real. So when Obama brings up race (by asking for Ferraro to be fired), everyone gets all sensitive about it, and then think they should label Ferraro a racist. But no one would think of labeling all the men who call Hillary degrading names “sexist.” They just accept it as a fact of life.

He is responding to what GERALDINE said first! Just like what the Clinton’s did with Powers! That is the problem. Clinton can do and say anything, but when you throw that BS back at her camp then that is being unfair and dirty when they began the BS to begin with. If he or his camp retaliates to Hillary’s foolishness he is being dirty, when he doesn’t respond he is inexperienced and not fully vetted! Lose-lose!
What Geraldine said is NOT offensive it is the truth. I am sick to death of having to watch every single word in the media because the Obama camp plays the friggin “racist” card.
He is the most spoiled, whiney boneheaded person I ever seen and I can’t stand anymore of this crying about every single thing anyone says about him. Even his old Granny in Kenya is whining for him. He has a lot of nerve to whine while being linked with Rezko, Auchi, Wright and Farakhan. He belongs to a black supremist church and uses the excuse because its in a black community it makes it right fot them to post their value system to cater to the BLACK man. I can tell you one thing I hope and pray Obama does not get nominated and if he does I am a democrat and will vote for McCain. At least McCain has a back bone and is not boneheaded.
__________________________________________________________________
How is another woman calling Hillary a monster sexist?
_______________________________________________________________
So because Geraldine is “important” it is okay to slang mud and make racy remarks, but when a “nobody” does it–it’s a problem? Is that what you are saying?
Obama did NOT fire Powers she resigned. Obama did not fire the aide who had the back door meeting with Canada when he clearly told the press he knew nothing about it.
Obama calls his dealings with Rezko “boneheaded mistakes” well I call them illegal and he should be sitting on trial just like Rezko. He runs from the press when they finally ask the hard questions. He is a spineless bonehead. I will vote for McCain if he gets the nominee and I have been a democrat my entire voting life. Obama needs to go back to Africa and help his Granny get a television. I am so sick of his whining.
There are sexist people in this country, and there are racist people in this country. Doesn’t mean that people being racist is an excuse for supporters of Obama to be sexist. And people being sexist to Hillary isn’t an excuse for Geraldine to say something racist.
I have yet to see an event where a member of Obama’s campaign made a sexist comment that was not denounced and was fired/resigned from the campaign. If that occurred, I’d be just as up in arms. There is simply no excuse for sexism or racism.
Please do tell when Obama played the race card. I was an objective obeserver of this campaign until about two weeks ago, and I have yet to see him play the race card. It is Hillary’s supporters than continually bring up race.
And how, based on his campaign team, can you say he will fill all of his cabinet with African Americans? He has an extremely diverse campaign team, and almost none of his most important advisors or directors are African American.
I am simply asking that this campaign be about the issues, the candidates, this country and its people. Race and sex have no place in any of this.
Maybe I’m naive, but I truly believe we can have a campaign with a woman and a black man as the two candidates where race and sex are not an issue. Geraldine’s comments don’t help this.
Geraldine didn’t call Obama a name, like Power did to Hillary. She said he was luccky for rising so fast to be a serious contender for president. Axelrod has scewed that, asnd is using the race card. When anyone close to Hillary mentions sexism, they are ridiculed, as if it’s not a real issue.
________________________________________________________________
What is the difference between Geraldine’s comments and Power’s? Power’s stated a comment I deemed as true and got fired. Now you Hillarytards think that it is petty because you think what Geraldine said was true! If she called Hillary a bitch, what would be a more accurate statement I could see where the problems would lie, but monster come on! Hillary better be happy Barack isn’t white, as she would have been kicked out of the race before TX and OH. So it works both ways.
To 25. What Experience:
Ferraro speaks from a position of experience in this matter as a woman who ran for office, including a shot at the White House. I believe she is entitled to her opinion. Her opinion has sparked debate and is thought-provoking.
Power’s remark was just childish, something a nobody shouldn’t say if she wants her career to go forward.
What happens after these comments from both sides is what is disgusting.
If you don’t think Powers was fired you are crazy! It was resign or get fired! Same choice different names…your out the door!
Jon, Axelrod is playing the race card by asking Ferraro to be fired for making a true statement — his assention has been fast, and is unique. Do you know how long and hard Ferraro was in politics before she could be considered as VP? Do you know the history of women struggling to get equality in this country? Do you realize that woman are paid far less than men, and Obama stepped up to run for president at a relatively young age when he could have wited, sharpened himself for a few more years, without stabbing a female contender - who truly loves this country - in the back?
_______________________________________________________________
So you are placing more value on Geraldine’s freedom of speech versus Power’s? That is what you are telling me. I respect her accomplishments, but to say that she has “earned” the right to say whatever she wants with impunity is a little far-fetched! Especially considering the flair up Hillary’s camp made of a simple word “monster.” Not bitch, not ho, not slut, or cunt….monster. Now that is petty if I have ever seen it.
It’s always racist when anything is said about Obama. This is what the country has to look forward to if he is the President. He will not unite.. this clearly shows he is a divider and a whiner. If he was not black he would not be the democratic runner because he lacks experience. His grand speech in 2004 seems to be the only thing that has even gotten anyone’s attention. All he does know is how to talk talk talk. Even his aide said he has NO plan on the table to withdraw from Iraq. This man is like the story the Emperor’s New Clothes. He struts around saying its so and everyone believes him even though all logic says it isn’t. He has NOTHING just like the Emperor had NO clothes. Wake up America before its too late and you have to deal with this man and all his ties to the terrorist nations. If Farakhan endorses him and Obama’s own church leader Wright praises Farakhan and Obama says his church leader Wright is his moral compass what more does America need to know???
Geraldine very eloquently stated the truth. Obama should not have any problem with the truth, right everyone!
Are you serious? Do YOU know how long Ferraro was in politics before she was considered as VP?
Geraldine Ferraro was born in 1935. In 1984, she was 49 years old, and had served 5 years in the US House of Representatives.
Barack Obama was born in 1961. In 2008, he is 47 years old. He has served in the IL State Legislature for 8 years, and in the US Senate for 5 years.
To 33, What Experience:
I am saying what Ferraro said is at least something open for discussion that provokes intelligent thought and debate. What Power said was juvenile at best. If you cannot see the difference, that is fine.
____________________________________________________________
IT IS NOT TRUE, it is an OPINION. Same as with Power’s. You just happen to agree with it. Just like I agree with Power’s. That is the problem it is an opinion and their is no concrete proof otherwise. If there is proof to Geraldine’s claim prove it! You are trying to make this a referendum on gender or race when it is not! Clinton has had to work hard to get where she has no doubt about it, but you are not going to tell me she worked harder than Obama. Obama was actually in the Presidential Race BEFORE Hillary. She should have waited! Why should he have waited? Just like why should he take a VP slot? Why does Hillary and her supporters think that this was supposed to be her race or is owed to her?
What Geraldine said is NOT offensive or racist nor is it a personal attack on Obama’s character as Power’s remark was about Hilary. Quit acting like toddlers tattle telling and say yes sir, no sir, yes sir, no sir. She did it…no she did it…no she did it first. Look at how insane this has all gotten. I truly is deduced down to the fact NO ONE is allowed to challenge Obama in any shape or form. NO ONE is allowed to voice their experienced opinion on Obama’s qualifications. He would not have a chance at the democratic nominee if he weren’t black because it would be clear he does not have the experience or qualifications for the job. What Geraldine is spot on and if the truth hurts too bad it did not slander his personal character like Powers did. NOT THE SAME and you know it.
Sorry 3 years not 5.

Clearly what you are stating is that Obama would make a good running mate as Vice President.
Man..if someone said this about Hillary (being a woman)…there would be such an uproar, and whoever said it would be out of politics forever. You can put that in the bank.
So then, are we allowed to say that Hillary Clinton wouldn’t be where she is if she were not a woman who married the most brilliant Democratic politician of our generation?
Didn’t think so.
Can anyone explain the difference to me?
cathy-
How can you say the things you people say about Obama, then say you’d want him as VP. That’s the most hypocritical thing I’ve ever heard, and quite sickening. Make up your mind. Is he ready to be President or not.

Well I am sure we would have an equally rosy time as Hillary and Bill will no doubt be in any number of lawsuits and mischief. She is running as a women’s lib candidate and not the best qualified candidate. I don’t care if you are a women period! I want a PERSON, woman or man, black, white, blue, or purple that I feel is the best person for the job. Time after time, after time, Hillary is running on the platform of a strong woman candidate, and not the best candidate. Obama is not running as a black candidate he is running as the best candidate. He doesn’t mention race in his speeches. That is a deathblow, look at Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson…how many states did they win? He is running as everyones President, Hillary seems to be running as a President for women.
Quoted for Truth!
If her last name wasn’t Clinton she would have been hit the pavement!
