Katrina vanden Heuvel, the editor of The Nation magazine, told Chris Matthews today on Hardball that Sen. Barack Obama’s plagiarism scandal should not have been covered on the program because, she feels, it doesn’t matter to the common person. An incredulous Matthews responded that she should ask Sen. Joe Biden whether these kind of issues matter — a reference to Biden being forced to quit his bid for the presidency in 1987 after he plagiarised a speech. Pat Buchanan, a guest on the show, said that he felt this was a “bad day” for Obama, and that his character will likely be called into question more often now in the campaign.

I’ll be looking much more astutely for cases of plagiarism in The Nation now that I better understand Katrina’s motives. She’s so in the tank for Obama that, as a liberal publisher, she should retire.
Bighead DC, the blog, has stirred up a firestorm with this Obama plagiarism meme but is getting no credit. Drudge, disliking blogs, has linked to the story through the Breitbart site. Breitbart, in case you don’t know, is/was Drudge’s editor and he started a separate site to rent newsfeeds that Drudge could link to. This is a subsidiary business that keeps Drudge “legit” in the eyes of the news agencies.
The Youtube video comparison between Patrick and Obama started it all and was posted by a new account holder who opened his account yesterday between five and six p.m. according to the Youtube info text next to a video. Bighead DC ran with the story at 7:35 pm, within two hours of the video poster joining Youtube to post the video. Coincidence? I think we are seeing the genesis of a national political firestorm.
(Much more after the jump)
Meanwhile, the Larry Sinclair meme is now taking on a life of its own. This was a story that broke on thesmokinggun.com and Bighead DC and again featured “documentary evidence” on Youtube as well as a Sinclair page on MySpace. Sinclair has gone public with his damaging testimony with no stated motive.
The latest Sinclair development is that Larry has agreed to take a polygraph test to prove he is not lying. The blogger administering the test will pay Sinclair $10k to take the test whether he passes or not and another $100k if he passes. All in service to the truth, right? The blogger, Daniel Parisis, is profiled here. No political affiliation given, however.
The mainstream media, and talk radio, will not touch the Sinclair affair. However people are making a connection between the November Novak “crisis” when the columnist disclosed that the Clintons were sitting on a major revelation that would sink the Obama candidacy. Remember that one? The back and forth about “dirty” politics among Dems?
Things are now moving forward. Last night on the Batchelor Report on WABC radio in New York, John Batchelor, an avid McCain supporter, had a Human Events staffer on. They spent the whole 9:00 pm segment teasing the audience. Batchelor said, We are going to be reporting details on Obama’s background uncovered by the Clinton opposition research team. These are major revelations. We understand people will be upset that we are helping her campaign but this information is too important not to share it with the public. This riff on a theme went on for 10 minutes without getting to any details, so I assume details are to come. What’s important here is the esteem Batchelor is held in by the mainstream media and certain other talk hosts. This story will now have legs.
A final note on Batchelor’s “dirty job but someone has to do it.” There is no overt connection between the Sinclair scandal and the Clinton camp. This is an inference based on the Novak flap in November and it is a reasonable one, especially given the antics at Bighead DC.
By connecting Clinton to the Sinclair charges while publishing the charges, Batchelor (and the talkers who eventually follow his lead) is setting up Obama for a fall with backlash to follow against Clinton.
It would only matter if a white person did it.
The Nation has gotten out of hand; very self-righteous and forgives only those it loves. You should read what it wrote about Joe Biden when there were 8 candidates. Plagiarism is serious: a man who doesn’t know how to give credit (even when that person is a friend) doesn’t belong in the presidency. Joe Biden knew it in 1988 and left the race to become a senior statesman. Would that he were the man still in this race and not the green behind the ears Obama. Katrina vanden Heuvel obviously isn’t smart enough to be an editor—she probably copies her editorials from someone she’s not crediting.
The New York Times reports that last week Barack and Deval, who are good friends, had a conversation and that Deval suggested that Barack use these lines, and Deval sent Barack a copy of the speech for his use.

Furthermore, Hillary herself has led chants of “Yes we can” at her campaign rallies, and also, she attacked Barack by asking “Where’s the beef?” which was the phrase used by Walter Mondale to attack Gary Hart in 1984 (and also was lifted from a Wendy’s commercial).

I thought Obama was a brilliant lawyer. Then he should of known better than to steal a whole speech. What kind of corn fed gypsy lawyer is OBAMA
I do not think that we assume that political speeches are entirely authored by the politician himself. Most political speeches are written by speechwriters or with their assistance. From what I understand, Obama has never put this material out in writing claiming authorship. That is what Biden did, and that does constitute plagiarism.
[…] Non-issue, snorts Katrina Vanden Heuvel of The Nation. Only Beltway pundits care about plagiarism. Unemployed workers couldn’t care less. […]
Does Katrina assume that the “common person” is a moron? Does she pick and chose which stories favor her choice? Does she think the public is too stupid to catch on? Obama has no original ideas. He has accomplished nothing as a politician. If the media refuses to address this blatant case of plagiarism, then it shows their ignorance and contempt for the “common person”. To back a person who tells us nothing, one of whom we know very little;is to vote blindly. Katrina should be ashamed of herself. If she and Obama believe plagiarism does not matter, they are fools;history tells us differently.
