The Barack Obama campaign blanketed college campuses in Iowa with thousands of brochures, which read, “If you are not from Iowa, you can come back for the Iowa caucus and caucus in your college neighborhood.”

Why is this a ’scandal’? What the mailer said is ‘true’ — Iowa college students ‘are’ legally allowed to caucus in Iowa even if they’re from out of state. It may not please the Iowa Democratic Party bosses, but it’s legal. Deal with it folks.
It’s scandalous bc the kids can’t vote in Iowa. It’s false. It’s dirty politics.
“Legal but controversial” per the Des Moines Register still equals “legal” folks. Lesson learned? Ignore/mock youth voters at your peril in the future.
Legal does not mean his nose is clean.
As is typical, if someone can’t make an argument based on reason, fact, legality, they resort to the comment above. Enjoy your conspiracies and sour grapes!
Obama is the one who always makes arguments about not liking dirty politics. Sounds like you don’t like the fact he’s a hypocrite, Chris.

Not really Obama’s problem. He’s only being politically astute. If the rules permit that, he should take advantage of it, just as candidates who do well with elderly people should arrange to have vans pick them up on voting day. Politicians have to play the game to win, because their opponents will, and one cannot change the world unless one first wins the elections.
However, there is plenty of finger-pointing to be done:
1) Shame on the people who wrote the rules so that this could be done. The Iowa caucuses, flawed as they are in so many ways, should at least represent the people of Iowa.
2) And shame on the national media for attaching so much importance to this ridiculous caucus process in the first place. It would be silly even if it couldn’t be dominated by 17-year-olds and college kids from other states. It deserves no more national attention than Wyoming but the ravenous 24-hour news networks have an enormous appetite for fresh meat and this was their story line du jour.
Points taken, Scoop, but as far as I know, Obama has been running on the premise that dirty politics is bad. Still, he masterfully played this game. Sort of hypocritical, no?
No. I don’t see a contradiction. I would call it dirty politics if he ran one of those ads where the guy with the deep voice says, ‘… but Hillary Clinton wants to let Iranians eat your puppies …’
But getting your own eligible voters to the polls is just plain ol’ politics. He wasn’t the one who made them eligible in the first place. THAT’s the guy we need to criticize.
What it does show, however, is that his Iowa results are inflated by the extent that this influenced the results, and that Barack will not be able to muster comparable support elsewhere without finding his votes in other nooks and crannies of the populace.
It goes to show you that, whatever else he might be, Obama is a Chicago politician. Those people would import dead alients from the moon if they thought they could get away with it.
