UPDATE, 10:15: Fire is said to be under control; no one injured.
Original, 9:45: Thick black smoke is barreling out of the historic structure at this moment. The Vice President’s ceremonial office is located in the building, and many of his staff members and other White House staffers work there. The building has been under construction recently. Workers are being evacuated at the moment. An electrical fire is said to be the cause.
Could winds cause the fire to spread to the White House? Thousands of historical documents could face smoke or water damage.
The building was formerly called the Old Executive Office Building. It is a National Historic Landmark, and was built between 1871 and 1888.
