Rep. Jim McCrery of Louisiana has become the eighteenth House Republican who will not seek re-election In 2008.
“Twenty years is a long time to serve in Congress,” McCrery said in a statement released Friday evening. “I believe it is time for me to step aside and let someone with fresh enthusiasm and new ideas step in to represent the 4th District.”
McCrery was in a position to become chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, if the GOP won the 2008 elections.
McCrery is perhaps best known for helping write and pass the Welfare Reform Act of 1996 and President Bush’s 2001 and 2003 tax cuts.

McCrery is said to be bisexual. In 1992, The Advocate published an exposé about his rumored bisexuality.
