sam-donaldson.JPGA press release sent this evening by Hustler publisher Larry Flynt confirms that a phone number belonging to ABC newsman Sam Donaldson appeared in the records of the alleged “DC Madam” Deborah Jeane Palfrey, as Big Head DC first revealed some time ago. Radar magazine and the Huffington Post have both falsely claimed that the Big Head DC story was somehow factually inaccurate. We have long claimed that the existence of Donaldson’s number in Palfrey’s records - combined with the existence of phone records of one or more other news personalities from the ABC network in the records - prevented ABC News from revealing a fuller report on the spectrum of politicos and others within Palfrey’s records when the network released their exclusive Brian Ross interview with Palfrey in May of this year. In essence, there was a cover-up by ABC News. Palfrey has confirmed as much to Big Head DC.

The full release follows:

Flynt Chose Not to Expose Sam Donaldson

In response to a story by online news source Big Head DC that a phone number belonging to ABC newsman Sam Donaldson appears in the phone records of former D.C. Madam Deborah Jeane Palfrey, Larry Flynt confirms that his researchers discovered the number months ago but chose not to reveal it.

“We did not release the information because Donaldson did not meet our criteria for being a hypocrite,” Flynt said. “Donaldson is not a politician and does not make the kind of daily decisions that affect our lives.”

After researchers at HUSTLER headquarters found the number in July 2007, they informed D.C. investigator Dan Moldea, who confirmed the information with Palfrey.

HUSTLER researchers have also found other numbers belonging to media figures, but have chosen not to reveal the information. Flynt has repeatedly stated that his aim is not to publish scandals for their own sake but rather to expose hypocrisy and challenge those who try to impose moral values on others.

  1. 9 Comments to 'Flynt Confirms Sam Donaldson’s Number Appears In
    DC Madam’s Records, But He Chose Not to Reveal It;
Signs Point to ABC News Cover-Up'

  1. Two issues.

First, the press release from Flynt is irrelevant to your dispute with Radar. Radar never argued against your assertion that Donaldson’s name was in Palfrey’s phone records. Radar’s beef was with how you characterized it, and in particular that you didn’t include Palfrey’s repeated denials that he had been a client or her explanation for why his name was in her records.

Second, your dispute with Radar doesn’t matter anyway. They could be right or wrong about the Donaldson/Palfrey incident, and it just doesn’t matter with respect to your latest news about Trent Lott. You’ve made a series of specific statements. In response, your critics and one of the subjects of your story has called you a liar.

The thing to do is to put all of your primary source material out there so people can judge it for themselves. As you know, I think your reporting rings true. But it’s going to boil down to whether or not you’ve got what you say you have, i.e., the e-mails and other documentary evidence of meetings between Lott and Nicholas.

If you have that evidence, you could be Satan’s third bastard child and it won’t matter. If you don’t have the evidence, you could sit and the right hand of Jesus H. himself and it won’t matter. Let’s see what you’ve got.

I think it’s a major story that ABC News covered up for one of their own, rather than reporting the truth. Why no one is trumpeting that fact from the heavens is beyond me. And how would Radar have any idea of the reporting that has gone into this story?

    I think this sucks.

Lott’s a special case, because of how he voted and what he did during Clinton’s impeachment. But even outing Lott probably isn’t cool — it’s very hard for me to get a handle on it, because I’m so angry at the Republican party now.

But I don’t want to live in a world where everyone’s sex life is dragged out to humiliate them. I’m glad ABC didn’t go public with this stuff, and I’d hope they’d do it even if their own people weren’t involved. They shouldn’t do it because it’s wrong, and if it takes having one of their own in that situation to make them see that it’s wrong, I’m glad that at least they got the message.

Why do you put so much faith in what Radar reported, Charles? They haven’t even a clue of how to spell Palfrey’s name correctly. Regarding source material, as you already know from our e-mails with you off the site, stay tuned.

  1. It’s not a matter of faith. I was a reporter myself. Real journalists (fewer and fewer of those around these days) go by three things: Instincts, judgment, and facts. Faith is irrelevant at best.

My instincts tell me that you’re right about the Trent Lott story. I’ve been urging you to release all of the facts, because at the end of the day it’s the facts that rule the day. You counsel patience, but my judgment leads me to counsel speed. You’re in control, so you’ll do what you’ll do. I am a news taker, not a news maker.

I don’t have faith in Radar, or in you for that matter. What I did is read their coverage, and yours. From doing so, one thing is clear: It is a fact that Radar didn’t dispute you about Donaldson being on Palfrey’s list. Rather, Radar disputed you about the circumstances surrounding Donaldson’s name being in her call records, and they questioned your judgment in handling the matter.

My instincts tell me that Radar is correct, but it’s a weak signal: I wouldn’t be surprised if you’re right. My instincts also tell me that we (your readers) will never have the facts. My judgment tells me that it’s a side issue, and that conflating it with the Trent Lott story does you no particular good.

All of that said, it is facts that rule the day. They trump instinct and usually even judgment. This is why, in all of my commentary in all of the threads, I’ve been stressing my judgment that you should be putting the facts — all of them, in a verifiable fashion — out there sooner rather than later. Bear in mind that a mere assertion of fact is not a fact. Only a verifiable fact is a fact, as readers of the Drudge Report have come to learn.

Don’t start thinking that I’m against you on this. Other way around. I want to see your story out there, in a form that will be unassailable as to the facts, which in my world rule the day. I realize this is a long comment, but I hope it clarifies what I have been trying to say. I wish you the best of luck. Really, I do.

One last thing: Going after someone for their spelling errors is the last refuge of a losing argument. If Radar misspelled Palfrey’s name, it’s immaterial.
