Why is one of the Politico’s only black writers Helena Andrews portrayed as a drinker? All of the other caricatures on their pages are pretty vanilla, if you catch our drift. Maybe if there were a tad bit more diversity in that newsroom, it wouldn’t be an issue?

To me, it looks like they’re portraying her as a sophisticated chick with pearls and a martini. More pretentiously Algonquin Roundtable than racist. Methinks you’re reading way too much into this. (Because you want to.)
Additionally, they way in which the caricature portrays her normally beautiful ethnic features reminds of a drawing from a 19th century eugenics textbook.

Those big dangly earrings are very ethno-centric/racist. Just because she’s black it doesn’t mean that she wears tribal jewelery.
Oh noooo, they’re not being racist to her. The fact that her parking space says TOKEN is just a coincidence.
I just looked at all their other pasty white caricatures. Why is there no other person of color on that staff? It’s outrageous. I hear that Jim Vandehei is a big GOP fat cat, so why am I not surprised?
I’m good friends with a blogger with the initials L. L. His girlfriend works at the Politico. I hear all kinds of stories about the racist things Vandehei says when his token isn’t around.

This is so dumb. Her column on Politico is called “Pop and Politics,” and deals with the more style and entertainment-type aspects of politics. It makes sense that the caricature would portray her as a socialite-type person who rubs elbows with politicians in the DC bars.
To the person who commented about her earrings, look at the Politico website - she is wearing huge dangling earrings in her picture.
A problem with the caricature, however, is that it doesn’t really look anything like her.
