Commenters on the DCist blog are saying that editor Sommer Mathis has cooked a story, and those involved with the story are backing up the claims.
Mathis recently reported that The Flats at Dupont Circle condo development had evicted an unsuspecting tenant. She presented photographic evidence of a few boxes strewn on the street as proof, but she didn’t ask the condo’s owners whether there had actually been an eviction.
“To me, that doesn’t look like all someone’s worldly belongings - it looks more like someone’s leftovers after they moved out. From the pictures, it looks like - what? - 3-4 boxes’ worth of stuff, and no furniture?” one DCist commenter noted. ”I live in a studio, and I got rid of most of my stuff before I moved here, but I’ve got to have easily 4-5 times as much crap, not counting my bed and other big things. Maybe it’s someone who at the last minute realized they couldn’t fit everything into their U-Haul, or someone who moved overseas, or something.”
Another disgusted commenter, apparently familiar with the situation, said: ”Even blogs should at least try to present things factually. If not, there should be a big disclaimer. Something like, ‘We reserve the right to just make shit up and/or ignore relevant facts when it suits our limited world view.’”
Big Head DC has learned that there was not an eviction — Mathis either mistakingly reported the story, or may have purposely littered the boxes herself in an effort to get a scoop.
