Turkish newspapers are printing gruesome pictures of Iraqis killed by U.S. soldiers in response to American political efforts to label the country as having committed genocide. The headline on this page, “Soykırım diyene bak,” is translated directly into English as, “look who is talking about genocide,” and it links to several graphic photos.

The Turkish press closely followed a U.S. Congressional committee meeting last night, during which a resolution describing the 1915 slaughter of Armenians as a genocide was voted through. House leader Nancy Pelosi has long supported the measure, and it’s believed a majority of the House does, too.

It’s a move the White House predicted would severely damage relations with Turkey. “This resolution is not the right response to these historic mass killings,” George Bush told reporters just hours before the House Foreign Affairs Committee met to consider the measure. The president is desperate to keep Turkey as an ally.

Anti-war protesters, too, are angry that the U.S. government is focusing on foreign killings from decades ago, rather than definitively trying to end the war in Iraq.

More Turkish media presentations of the “shock and awe” after the jump:

It does seem pretty hypocritical of Pelosi and the Democrats to go after this anti-genocide bill, doesn’t it? Maybe they should focus on ending the war and slaughter in Iraq — which they don’t seem interested in doing — and not on century-old wars.

Another point: why are they so worried about this supposed thing and not focused on ending the genocide in Darfur WHICH IS STILL ONGOING AND PEOPLE ARE DYING EVERYDAY!

I wonder how long it will take for Wonkette to rip off this post. Care to start the stopwatch, anyone?

This is crazy! I didn’t even know Pelosi was doing this. Yes, Wonkette will steal it, snark it up and then talk about Big Head DC behind its back.

Pelosi is a major disappointment. I hope Cindy Sheehan whoops her ass in the next election!

Speaking of Wonkette, this is the hottest issue in DC today, and I don’t think they’ve mentioned it. I guess those new “journalists” they hired are really working out well.

This is all very disturbing. What are the priorities in our country these days? Is there nothing better for Congress to spend their time on?

It looks like American congressmen have nothing else to keep themselves busy with. Otherwise they would not waste time with this kind of BS while their country is bogged down in the middle of a war (two, actually, if you count the war on terror too). All this is for the votes of several thousand Armenians in California. But these politicians will be utterly surprised and will need to make an explanation to the American public when Turkey takes retaliatory action.

Parnee is really struggling at Gawker. His posts aren’t getting any hits at all. Denton (R-Gay) probably thinks he’s cute or something cuz he ain’t got any obvious talent. By the way, did you know that Nick Denton was originally a foaming pro-Iraq War jingo circa 2002? What a loon! Hoo-hoo! Hoo-hoo! That’s daffy!

Turkey needs to stay silent on this topic. I can think of three ethnic groups that might have a bit to say about the Turks and Genocide; the Armenians, the Greeks, and the Kurds. If remember my history correctly, the term Genocide was actually coined in connection to the Turkish pogroms that were literally executed starting in 1905.

Now, when is the world going to resolve to stop the genocides while they are happening, instead of ringing their hands after the killing is over.
