This week Gawker Media announced that 22-year-old New York University dropout Alex Pareene would soon become the newest editor at the company’s NYC-based media blog. Gawker commenters, as usual, were abuzz with speculation about Nick Denton’s latest boy toy. Many wondered whether he likes men or women, and most wanted to know much more about his personal life, since Gawker usually does a thorough job of highlighting such details about its subjects.

Pareene, of course, has been an editor at one of Gawker’s other flagship publications, Wonkette, since January 2006, having taken that job over from the infamous Ana Marie Cox, a self-described lover of ass fucking and now Time.com’s top online editor. Blog rankings, according to Alexa data, have been sharply down during his tenure.
While it’s unknown whether Pareene shares Cox’ affinity for butt sex, he has been known literally suck on cell phones – maybe that’s his version of phone sex? – and he’s made friends with many of Washington’s media elite, despite trying his darnedest to maintain a hipster image. He’s also publicly shilled for his step-mom Wendy Wilde, a Minnesota politician, within several Wonkette posts.
Pareene has grown most notorious in D.C. circles as of late for his failure to protect his girlfriend Ally Zay (Kearney) during a recent robbery the couple faced together—a scene that saw Pareene huddled on the ground in something resembling the fetal position. While they both claim to have known their robber was using a finger to stick ‘em up, they still gave him a bunch of money, and Pareene didn’t do anything to protect his gal during the incident.
After the robbery was reported in the Washington City Paper, some real secrets started to spill. A gentlemen commenter on the article named Tom Millar said that he was surprised to find that Zay was dating Pareene, since he claims he’s still married to her.
And Zay’s not denying it. She told us via e-mail that she didn’t want to go into details about her relationship with Millar, but she did thank us for asking. She would not further elaborate on why Pareene’s been dating her while another man claims to be married to her.
