Larry Flynt, the publisher of Hustler magazine, is mad. Damn mad.
Two months ago Sen. David Vitter (R-Lousiana) took a weeklong vacation after Flynt’s investigative journalist Dan Moldea revealed that he had used the services offered by ”DC Madam” Deborah Jeane Palfrey.
The Senator quickly apologized before television cameras with his wife Wendy Vitter at his side, saying that his adulterous behavior had happened only one time.
Then, he returned to the Senate, literally received high-fives from his Republican colleagues, and settled back in to business as usual.
Meanwhile, Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho) was outed for soliciting sex from a male in a bathroom in Minnesota in the latter part of this August. In record time, almost all Republican leadership denounced him, and top officials, including Sen. John McCain, asked for his resignation. He is expected to resign from the Senate at the end of this month.
Flynt said in a press conference today that he believes the GOP has been hypocritical in its treatment of Craig, while most members let Vitter off the hook. He did not blame this fact on homophobia, however — he believes the GOP felt much more secure that another Republican would be appointed in Idaho after Craig’s ouster than in Louisiana if Vitter were to resign in the more liberal state, with a Democratic governor.
“I don’t like someone voting for me in the Senate when they’re lying,” Flynt said. “I’m trying to maintain some honesty in government.”
