For those who have been following the case of the six American University students who protested Karl Rove when he visited their school in April — and then were punished by campus officials and later arrested by the Secret Service — excuse us for going over tired ground.
But for those of you who are just now getting caught up on what’s being deemed as AssGate 2007 (because one of the protesters mooned Rove), here’s an update.
Each of the kids turned their dangerous butts in at 5 a.m. today, and were then held in custody for 8 hours before posting a $100 bond each and being released.
“I hope that counts for our fine,” Joel Gardner, the notorious mooner said today, referring to the outcome of his plea agreement. “We might have to pay another $100, plus like $500 each for the lawyer.”
Mark Goldstone, a lawyer for the protesters, earlier helped them broker a deal with prosecutors that will allow their arrest records will be wiped clean (like a dirty butt). A charge of crossing a police barrier was also dropped (like a piece of poop).
So why was the heavy hand of the law applied here?
“We strongly support people’s constitutional right to protest,” Melissa Merz, spokeswoman for D.C. Attorney General Linda Singer, said, “but it has to be done within the context of following law enforcement directions aimed at ensuring public safety and order.”
It should be noted that Rove could have prevented this messy situation from progressing in the first place.
And here’s the video of the events that all started AssGate 2007:
