With Fred Thompson ready to finally announce this week that he’s really going to run for president, his wife Jeri has been forced to rest a bit of the control she’d gotten used to wielding over the summer, Big Head DC has learned.
“She’s not happy about it,” a campaign insider told us today. “But she’s closer to ever to getting what she wants, so she’ll deal with it for now… But watch out for her moves down the road.”
As the Thompson campaign faced several large financial and staff crises over the summer, many observers placed blame on Jeri, who Newsweek reports ”is known for a sharp tongue and sharper elbows.” Since spring, she has hired and fired staff several staff members – and demanded final approval of fund-raising events and travel schedules.
Privately, some staffers have taken to calling her a bossy, temperamental tyrant.
While the campaign would not officially comment on Jeri’s role, insiders have told us that Thompson himself has seen the need to reign in her ambitiousness. Lately, he’s put more confidence in his new campaign manager Bill Lacy, a veteran Republican strategist who’s directed his Senate campaigns.
