Glenn Greenwald has been championing the cause of uncovering Politico’s alleged political biases for some time now. Many in blog world, it seems, think the new Washington publication is unabashed in towing the party line for the GOP. Main examples thus far: Its owners are close friends with the Bush family, one of its top editors is married to an ultra-conservative power player and many of its stories appear tougher on the Dems than the GOP. New evidence emerged today to support the thesis: Jeff Patch, formerly a reporter with the Politico, will begin a position on Monday as the press secretary for Rep. Tom Latham (R-Iowa).

Just because one reporter (who was fired mind you) is working for a Republican Member doesn’t say anything about the publication’s stance. Being from Iowa and having covered the caucuses, Jeff Patch has a working knowledge of Iowa politics and was looking for a job (any job) where he could remain in DC and use his skills. As a kid who was fired from his first post-college job and burned bridges when he quit his internship at Roll Call after only a few weeks, I can’t blame editors for not wanting to hire him. If he has a chance to stay in DC, where he presumably has friends (although I have no idea who would want to be friends with this arrogant jerk) and a place to live, and avoid returning to Iowa, who cares who he goes to work for. Why don’t you spend your time focusing on what role the publisher plays in the editorial content because it’s clear neither VandeHei or Harris have a political agenda. If they did, why would they have bothered working at The Post?
Susan, thanks for those thoughtful comments. While Patch’s situation is sad (and many journalists have been burned by the Politico in similar ways), his ideology does seem reflective of other reporters currently on staff at the Politico. I’m not so sure that most journalism watchdogs would say that VandeHei or even Mike Allen don’t have a political agenda. That’s fine, of course, but they are saying they are a nonpartisan publication. Which is a huge problem.

In effect, the publication, well-known for its lack of diversity and conservative leanings, has strong armed a Hispanic upstart publication into changing its name.”Not content with taking stories that Hispanic journalists have already published and passing them off as exclusive, and THEN sending e-mails to Hispanic journalists [who had already broken the stories]…it seems that The Politico now also claims they own the Spanish language…,” writes Patricia Guadalupe, executive editor of the Capitol Standard. […] Haunt Latest Retiring Rep. | “OH, DANA!” | O’Donnell’s Mormon Meltdown | Jesus Shortage… Huffington Post Slams Politico, Calling It Biased Wednesday December 12th, 2007 9:29 AM by BHDC Staff Filed under: Journalism, AriannaHuffington, Politico Reporting news is becoming ever more tricky for the liberal Huffington Post blog. One of their writers has dissected a recent piece in the Politico, saying that the words the authors of the piece use to write about Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama indicate a conservative bias. The words, in fact, do support that contention, a contention that we’ve made several times in the past. But the Huffington Post noting that a publication is biased is just another pot calling a kettle black, and will give conservatives fodder to ignore and even mock the serious allegations. […]
