Once upon a time, there was a mysterious Web site set up by a Congressional staffer, or staffers, which only allowed other Congressional staffers to post messages on it. Speculation often ran rampant by commenters on the site regarding the sexiness of various Senators, the best place to grab a drink after work, and, rarely, wonky policy matters were even discussed. At some point, the identity of the staffer who set it up was revealed, and lots of people got fired.
But!
The firing part hasn’t happened yet. Today, Big Head DC brings you an exclusive interview with the site’s still anonymous creator:
Big Head DC: Would you expose the IP addresses of users, if you were ever caught?
Anonymous Creator: That would be impossible. The site is setup in such a way that I don’t even collect IP addresses.
BHDC: How did you come up with the idea for the Web site?
AC: I read about these Bored At sites in The New Yorker. There’s a boredatlamont.com for Harvard students, boredatsterling.com for Yale, and so on. They’re essentially IP-restricted message boards for students. I thought, hey, there should be something like that for Congress.
BHDC: Was this a difficult network to set up?
AC: No. You can easily find the IP ranges for the House and Senate. That’s public information. There are also plenty of message board platforms. All you need to do is tweak one in such a way that it’s IP-restricted.
BHDC: What’s been the most unique or interesting part of this experience?
AC: Being emailed by a Newsweek reporter four days after launching the site. I don’t think anything ever came of our conversation, but still I was shocked that I was being contacted by reporters so shortly after launching the site.
BHDC: Are you at all worried about being revealed as the creator of Capitolist?
AC: Absolutely. I’ve done all that I can to conceal my identity. All the reporters I’ve spoken with have promised not to reveal my identity.

[…] And the Capitolist kids are not happy: […]
