If you were waiting for a celebration fit for royalty after 21-year-old Shayna Rudd won the title of Miss District of Columbia this weekend, you’re probably madder than Queen Elizabeth at the BBC. And if you wanted to see civility in the world of beauty queens, you’d have had better luck tuning into a re-run of the bawdy “Flavor of Love” charm school girls on VH1.

Quicker than we could say “Watch out, Jon Benet,” one pageant attendee lashed out with some pretty nasty words about Rudd on the “Pageant Guru’s Message Forum,” claiming the Howard University student shouldn’t have run away with the crown because, said the poster, she apparently wore “stripper heels” — presumably shoes that look like they belong to a stripper.

Rudd’s footsies, it turns out, have long courted controversy in Capital City. When she was named homecoming queen at Howard in 2005, some of her fellow students claimed the contest was rigged — that she somehow “used people from certain organizations” to cheat her way to the top. When she was later selected to take part in a NY Times outreach program for minority students, some foes also claimed the beauty queen didn’t have the chops for real journalism.

Still, her twinkle toes do have their defenders. Wrote one student to the university’s newspaper after the homecoming controversy: “You cannot tell me that Shayna’s spellbinding dance did not captivate and command the attention of her audience…”

Our only advice for Shayna when she competes at the 2008 Miss America Pageant? Break a leg!
