So, apparently, sparrows are taking up residence in the salad bar sections of several local Whole Foods, and the stores’ managers don’t give a damn whether bird droppings, feathers or even Avian Flu get into our food.
“This is Pepe,” explains a local blogger regarding the above pic. “He lives in the salad bar at the Whole Foods in Tenleytown.
“No, I didn’t choose his name; you can thank the Whole Foods managers for that. When my friend complained about a bird in the pasta salad, the manager replied, ‘Oh, that’s just Pepe. We’ve been trying to catch him for weeks.’”
A commenter then added this delicious musing:
“There also is a bird living in the Old Town Alexandria Whole Foods but I don’t know if the staff named that one.”
Yum.
It’s a problem at all grocery stores. It’s the employee indifference that’s the issue here.
As a former WFM Tenley employee, I can tell you that the store manager, Muriel, will not be putting up with such shenanigans.
As the person who took this photo, I can tell you I was extremely uncomfortable the prepared foods manager’s response. It was along the lines of “Um, can you go show me which pasta salad he was in?”
I had to explain to him that I had a photo of the bird standing inbetween four tubs, but that I had seen him flying along the rows of food, jumping between them, taking bites while standing atop the food. He just stood still long enough to pose for my photo.
I was really, really, really disappointed by the manager’s response. I should not have to exlpain to him that a bird — sorry, Pepe — freely feeding from the open prepared foods section should warrant more than removing the one tub he happened to be standing in when someone was looking.
