NEW: Does Chris Matthews want his executive producer fired because of his mistake?
Original report, June 19, 7:35 p.m.:
“We’re all reacting here… putting on shit,” Chris Matthews just yelled after coming back from a commercial break before realizing that he’d gone live on the air. The verbal slip-up occurred during the second live airing of his MSNBC “Hardball” program today, and it’s believed the “shit” he referenced was a pre-packaged interview with the now-independent NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg by NBC lead anchor Brian Williams.
“I apologize for that,” Matthews said in a solemn voice after the Williams report aired. ”I shouldn’t have used that word on the air.”
The gaffe comes on the same day that Matthews was booed during his questioning of Hillary Clinton at a labor forum in DC. It also comes only weeks after some have begun speculating whether the diabetic talker is drinking too heavily in his private life.

Maybe he needs to go to AA, and stop drinking
i agree that he needs to hit up AA. His binge drinking has clearly gotten out of control.
How do you know it’s binge drinking? If he drinks every night, is that binge drinking?
Chris Matthews gave up driking many ,many years ago.It’s well documented. People use curse words all the time,it’s only a big deal when someone doesn’t have their mike off.This is a ridiculous slam,who hasn’t said the s word?
I have seen Chris drinking since he was diagnosed with diabetes in December of 2006.
he has the face of drunk. besides, i saw him slamming down vodka gimlets at the palm a couple weeks ago.
I doubt that NBC condones or appreciates Chris’s numerous recent off-color slips of the tongue during broadcasts regardless of viewers’ opinions of vulgarity.
There’s no excuse for cursing when you’re wearing a mic, turned on or off… I don’t care how experienced you are. You shouldn’t do it, PERIOD. Exercise self control!
Put him on a delay, or take him off the air. Don’t fire his producers for his lack of control.
The crap that comes out of Chris’ mouth (like Fred Thompson just makes you smell the English Leather; the cigar smoke; he’s so masculine. or… when he grovels over Tom DeLay, or Kaye Baily Hutchinson and tells them they are wonderful)
The word “shit” is one of his less offensive statements, as far as I’m concerned.

At that National Journal breakfast last month, Matthews showed up 45 minutes late and seemed pretty buzzed–mind you this was a 8:30am event. Gotta hand it to the guy, he holds it down.
