Ever since Big Head DC officially launched under the BHR Omnimedia banner in January, we have been “pro.” In less than three months, we began to regularly beat DCist, which has been around since 2004, in number of page views and readers. Over the course of those months, we have asked Jake Dobkin, manager of the DCist brand, why he has allowed Sommer Mathis to remain as editor-in-chief, as she has lost an amazing amount of market share compared to her predecessors, Mike Grass, Rob Goodspeed and Martin Austermuhle.
Dobkin, strangely, we thought, failed to answer. And today we learned why. He has chosen Mathis to be the “professional” blogger behind the site.
“I am excited though about the opportunity to do a bit more original reporting — having a day job always meant tracking down sources and finding our own stories was near impossible,” Mathis wrote today, ”and while the demands of editing and posting our regular content will mean they’ll be rare, I hope to post a handful of reported stories on DCist in the coming months.”
So, as we read it, even with a full-time pro-blogger like Mathis, DCist is going to continue to be a half-assed production. Kudos, kids.

Some questions:
1) How many readers do you have a day, Rob? And by readers I mean unique IP addresses.
2) Why don’t you publicly display Sitemeter or some other traffic tool?
3) How many links in Technorati does DCist have? How many does Wonkette have? Fishbowl DC? How many do you have?
And lastly, a comment: You’re not one to talk. For being a “pro” blogger, you don’t do much original work yourself. In fact, the majority of what you do is publishing pics of Alex Pareene. You constantly claim that you can do better than everyone else, yet you don’t. You’ve mocked every gossip writer out there, yet you’re not exactly turning heads yourself.
Just readin’ this now. You mean she hasn’t even been on staff all this time? You’ve GOT to be kidding. And what’s up with this crazy commenter asking about our readers? I mean, get a life, right? Or get a blog, if you want.
Mockette,
If Rob wants to talk up how good BHDC is, he should provide real stats, not simply Alexa charts. Magazines don’t get away with simply saying, “Hey, we get tons of readers!” They actually have to prove it. If Rob wants to talk smack on everyone else’s traffic, he should pony up the evidence to prove how “good” his own traffic is, right?
And he’s hardly one to criticize anyone else for the originality of their work…

Rob, tell the truth, cupcake:
\”asked Jaked Dobkin\” should be \”regularly stalked Jake Dobkin, gunning for the job yourself and then became completely unhinged when Gothmaist laughed in your face, because it is well known you are a total psycho.\”
Confused by last commenter.
Roosh is obsessed with Big Head DC!!!
How come Rob never responds to my questions or comments? Are they a little too tough for him to handle?
Waaaaaaaaah. Roosh asks “how come”???
Looks like BHDC has a stalker of its own.
Rob: In life, there are always going to be people who are more successful than you for reasons you can’t understand. Why not just accept that Sommer Mathis is running DCist and you’re not, and just concentrate on being the best Big Head Rob you can be?
Who is Sommer Mathis?
If Sommer Mathis is DCist’s savior, I, for one, shall dance on its grave. She’s about as smart as a box of nails. Plus, she slept with MY HUSBAND.
