fishhole2.gifFrom a tipster who noticed our earlier Ryan Grim/Politico coverage:

Howie Kurtz disclosed in a Feb. 4, 2007 column that Ryan Grim, a reporter for the Politico, wrote a story for the Politico critical of White House drug policy without disclosing that he had once worked for the Marijuana Policy Project, an advocacy group that wants marijuana legalized.

But much worse, Grimm has written other articles over the years as well on the same issue without ever mentioning his previous employment. In those instances, his conflicts and non-disclosure were more brazen in that he wrote about issues he was directly involved in working on at his job at the Marijuana Policy Project. For example, in his advocacy job he wrote about the issue of medical marijuana, without disclosing that is what he worked on his advocacy job.

But even more brazen and more specifically, outside the rules of journalist ethics, he wrote a story about the death of a man named Henry Magbie, related to his marijuana use — even being quoted in a Colby King column about it in his role as staffer for the Marijuana Policy Project. He then wrote a long story himself on the subject for the Washington City Paper without disclosing his conflict.
