Big Head DC can now exclusively confirm that Mayor Adrian Fenty has chosen drag queen Cookie Buffet to be the interim director of Washington’s Office of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Affairs.
The man behind the Cookie, Christopher Dyer, told us this afternoon that he’s soon heading to New York to take in an opera and enjoy his “last weekend of freedom” before beginning the new job.
Despite his namesake, the plump power broker promises to be anything but cookie-cutter, and has long been used to tapping on the drag queen glass ceiling. “A typical performance by Cookie Buffet is NOT a typical drag performance,” according to CB’s Wikipedia entry. “Dyer usually does very little to effectively present a feminine image, generally wearing shapeless dresses coupled with a beehive wig and untraditional make-up reminiscent of the character Mimi from The Drew Carey Show.”
Besides prancing around as his alter ego on very special club nights, Dyer is also well-known for his activism on behalf of local gay issues. In 2003, he received the Capital Pride hero award and he also volunteers with Capital Pride and the DC LBGT Community Center. He’s also been elected as ANC Commissioner for the Logan Circle Neighborhood.
“I’m very excited,” Dyer says regarding his new position under the mayor. “[My] first goals are to listen to the needs of the community.”
One gay community member had this observation for BHDC: “I just hope he doesn’t go all Robin Williams in the Birdcage on us now that he’s working for the man. We already know he wears foundation. And that’s what we like about him.”
