Mark Kaye, the freshly fired co-host of 99.5’s “Hot Morning Mess,” shared some thoughts with Big Head Rob this morning about his former station, his replacement and his future plans:
BHR: Was this decision really out of the blue? Management said this morning that they’d been thinking about firing you since summer — could you feel anything in the air?
MK: We started negotiations with the company in July of this year, that part is true. We were under the impression that we had some terms to work out, but found out yesterday that that wasn’t the case. It may not have been a sudden decision for the management team, but the end came fairly suddenly for us, and for all of our listeners.
BHR: Have you heard of Kane before? What do you think of him?
MK: I have never heard of Kane. He apparently is very popular in Tampa, but I don’t live in Tampa, so I don’t know.
BHR: Are you confident that you can find a new job in radio in DC?
MK: We are already fielding offers and opportunities from other radio stations. I do not know where we will end up, DC would be fantastic! We love all of our fans here and hope that we can all stick together. The listeners that we have come to know over the past five years are the best people we’ve ever met. However, the best decision for us and our families, in the end, may require a move of some sort. But, as we all learned over the past few days, radio and broadcasting is a fickle and quick-to-change business and we would love to return to the DC area eventually.
BHR: Do your future plans include working with Kris Gamble again?
MK: Kris and I are a team. We go where the other one goes. Plus, it would be impossible for me to find any one else who can put up with my crap for four hours a day…and vice-versa! We appreciate all the kind words and support from the people in DC, MD and VA who are going to miss us. Somebody suggest that we put up a weekly podcast until we figure out where we are going to end up…that’s a possibility. Until then, keep checking out my Myspace page for updates (http://myspace.com/markkaye) and http://markkaye.com.
BHR: Thanks, Mark, and best of luck.
